DM's Report: Friends Depart, Stars Fall, Snakes Rise

General Summary

Resting from their battle with the duergar and fomorian, the heroes worked on a plan to escape the caverns. Korvac revealed he may know a secret passage that will lead them out. They took a short while to bandage themselves and investigated their foes, and found several items of interest.   Following Korvac he led them out of the tomb and down the cavern passage, stopping partway to search out a specific stone on the wall. Finding it he opened a secret door similar to the one that guarded the way to the duergar camp. This took the group on a long journey through a mostly narrow passage, twisting and rising back towards the surface. At one point the passage opened to reveal them walking a ledge above a large humid chamber, giant ferns covering the floor. They saw a group of sub-humans minding giant lizards far below them. Carrying on the tunnel closed around them again until it finally opened in a large bat cave with light just beyond. Carefully stepping through the guano, they emerged on the far side, worn but happy to see the sky once more.   Quickly the group realized they were far from Quickmarch, about a day's journey to the south. It was then that Vyth stated she had to return urgently to her village. Korvac and Trent Stormchaser went with her, leaving at a hurried pace. The rest gathered their bearings and noticed a pair of travelers not far away.   The cleric Iseldore and sorcerer Tayla Xilven were searching for the Abbey of Fallen Stars. Iseldore had been having terrible dreams suggesting evil things were happening inside its walls. The remaining heroes decided to join them in their quest as the abbey was not far away, thinking it may even provide a place of refuge for nightfall.   As they neared the found the grounds around were unkempt and the abbey itself looked worn, although they spotted movement through a window on an upper floor. Deciding a head-on approach made the most sense, Iseldore knocked on the front door of the abbey. After a moment it was opened slightly and a young woman looked out, asking the group what they were looking for. After introducing themselves they heard a voice behind her say, "It's alright Mira, let them in."   She opened the door and invited them into the abbey. They passed through a cloak room ( Pijarr liberated some mushrooms, smooth stones, and a few coins from some of the robes ), beyond and entry chamber, and into the main audience room of the abbey, noticing that the straw on the floor seemed old and in need of changing. The voice they heard belonged to a man who introduced himself as the son of Lord Dallion Falsword, the man who first built the abbey. He had Mira bring them refreshments and inquired as to what brought them here. After explainig Iseldore asked to hear more about the abbey and which god they worshipped.   The young Falsword wandered the room as he talked, notably closing the entryway door. He spoke of how his father was once a fervent follower of Oun. Eventually he sought to meet the gods face to face, In his search for power he turned from Oun, seeking power through other means and found the god Sseth. With that he pulled his hands from his sleeves revealing he had snakes for arms. Attendants sprang from the corner of the room, looking similar to their leader while Mira grabbed an adder-headed staff from behind a chair and battle was begun.   The tide of battle turned several times with the heroes having a strong start. Tayla hit Falsword with a slow spell from her wand of Wonder, but was felled by MIra and her serpent-headed staff, the head coming to life with a venomous bite. Iseldor was able to raise her with a healing spell, but they could not prevent one of the attendants killing Mortymer and fleeing to the upper level. The other attendant was brought down and Alara Dell’anonn gave the killing blow to Falsword.   In the aftermath Pijarr, George Delonn, and Iseldore followed the other attendant upstairs. They found two bedrooms and a ladder to a third level. George looked into the room above and found a serpentine humanoid which hissed at him but made no aggressive moves. Meanwhile Pijarr and Iseldore searched the master bedroom. While pulling books from a bookshelf they found a trigger to a secret door revealing a teleportation chamber. Iseldore ran in and immediately vanished.
