Dragon
Dragons
The dragons on Anthranon follow the western beast archetype. They are more intelligent than dogs, less intelligent than humans, and have no written language. These mighty beasts are known for their fiery breath and fearsome appetites. Though they once dominated much of the world, as the intelligent races, particularly humans, spread they began to hunt and kill dragons in and around their territories. They became trophies, those who slayed them were awarded the title of "Wyrmslayer".Different Types of Dragons
When we hear dragon we think of a great monster the size of a carriage if not a house. Those dragons do exist but they are the extreme minority. Dragons are seperated into 3 different categories based on their size; Great Wyrms are the largest most fearsome dragons, Horse Dragons are usually slightly larger than a horse, and Wolf Dragons which encompass anything smaller than a pony. These categories are based upon their full grown sizes and not at all related to age. Subsets of each dragon do exist but most, outside of dracologists and those in the Sumarrian Empire, only know the three size categories. The Dragon Crusades
Around 3000 years ago a man of unknown race known only as the deliverer traveled the world with a small army attempting to exterminate dragon kind. He nearly succeeded and for many years dragons were rare if found at all. It is said that only the efforts of Sumarr and his followers saved those dragons that remained. Breeding stock of each dragon breed were taken to the Dark Stone Islands as a part of Sumarr's pilgrimage. Eventually the deliverer died and his followers dispersed. The general hatred of dragons began to fade away after generations of near extinction made dragons rare outside of the Darkstone Islands. Many in Alberon believe dragons to be a myth or totally exterminated by the deliverer.Basic Information
Growth Rate & Stages
Dragons grow at varying rates based on their species. Most are full grown after 4-10 years. In general larger dragons grow slightly faster than their smaller kin. At 1 year a Wolf Dragon, Horse Dragon, and Great Wyrm are all about the same size, after which the larger dragons begin to pull away.
Additional Information
Domestication
There are those who try to domesticate dragons, most fail. Only in the Sumarrian Empire are dragons continuously domesticated, and that is said to only be possible with Zolmov's, the dragon sun god, blessing. There are rare success stories outside of the Sumarrian Empire though. In Alberon the possession of dragons or their eggs is illegal without a license from both the king and whatever count's territory you live in.
D&D Dragon Confusion
The dragons of Anthranon are different from those in the standard D&D lore. While in D&D "Great Wyrm" is often a category of dragon having to do with extreme age I felt it appropriate to redefine the term within the world.
