Roscoe Lite Language in Anisoptera | World Anvil

Roscoe Lite

History

Roscoe Lite is a script used by Eglen's first. A post distributing company. People who cannot write their messages themselves can dictate them to clerks in the post offices of Eglen's first. Where the clerks will write them down in their own secret script, to be sent via the Maynard-Stanway Mail Distributing System to wherever it needs to go. On the receiving side, the intended receiver can pay to have the message read out to them, or translated to normal text.

Design

Roscoe Lite is not designed to have a pronunciation. One can try to speak it in the common language, but that's very hard and only the most experienced clerks can pull that off.
The script uses codes for a lot of the most common word combinations to reduce the length of the messages. Other standard words are represented by symbols.
Contrary to normal text, Roscoe Lite is written in columns from top to bottom, from left to right.

Education

Clerks working at Eglen's first, will have to learn Roscoe Lite. Normally they learn it on the job, from their senior colleagues. To become eligible for a full salary, the clerks have to pass an exam to prove their proficiency in Roscoe Lite.

Exams are held at the Eglen's first post office no. 2, where a clerk has to write out a dictated 500 word letter in Roscoe Lite witout errors, while the letter is dictated at a normal speaking pace without repetitions.

Theft

Eglen's First asks a hefty sum for translation of their messages. First for the person sending it, and then again for the person receiving the message. There are those who claim to have learned Roscoe Lite and offer to translate messages for a lower price. So people try to pick up their messages untranslated from the post offices, and have them translated in the street. But without anyone being able to check the quality of these translations people can be fooled out of their money.

To protect their business the people of the Glorious Kingdom of Eglen against fraud. Eglen's First occasionally goes out trying to find these clandestine translators. As a punishment they cut out their tongues, so they cannot 'speak' Roscoe Lite anymore.

It's supposed to be a distopian capitalistic hell in the background with marvoulous steam tech in the foreground, with MC's battleing social injustace. at least that's in my mind.
