A catastrophe in Mirand results in permanent cloud cover spreading over the land, wrapping the land in darkness and giving rise to its nickname, the Evernight.

In an attempt to create weather they could control, alchemists in Mirand inadvertently created a permanent shadow spell of such power that no contemporary mage is currently able to dispel it, and plunging Mirand into the Evernight.   The Mirandians recollect the event as "the last time they saw the sun". On that day, night had enveloped their world, and night envelops it still.
