Skellyfish Species in Animus Extortus | World Anvil

Skellyfish

Keep them with care, or they'll become actual skeletons.
Skellyfish by Dutrius
The Skellyfish, also known as the "Skeleton fish" or "Glass fish", is an exotic species of catfish. They get their name from their see-through bodies, with their skeletal structure easily visible.   Skellyfish are not native to Eynoria, they are bred overseas and transported to Eynoria by Smokers, making them extremely expensive. Purchase of these fish are largely limited to wealthy nobility, and particularly rich guilds and merchant families, who keep them in small pools and ponds as ornamental fish.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Skellyfish have long, tapering bodies with small pectoral fins, a large tail fin, and an almost absent dorsal fin. The majority of their organs are located close to the head, between the gills.

Genetics and Reproduction

Skellyfish reproduction was first observed in Eynoria only recently, but the specifics are a very closely guarded secret.

Ecology and Habitats

Skellyfish are freshwater fish that require warm water, making only southern Eynoria, suitable for keeping them. Some areas with hotsprings are also suitable for heating the water.   They require vegetation to be healthy, and like some floating plant cover or overhanging areas to occasionally hide under.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Skellyfish primarily eat small brine shrimp or aquatic insect larvae. They have been known to eat tadpoles and the fry of other fish species.   Larger individuals are capable of eating small freshwater shrimp and crayfish, small fish such as minnows, and scraps of meat.

Additional Information

Uses, Products & Exploitation

Far too expensive to eat and inedible anyway, skellyfish are purely ornamental. Owing a pond or pool with a few skellyfish is considered a sign of great wealth and prestige.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Skellyfish have two large eyes, and a pair of long barbels.
Conservation Status
Not native to Eynoria, and being very rare and expensive, skellyfish are meticulously well kept.
Average Length
Most skellyfish grow to about 25cm in length, but can grow to well over a metre in ideal conditions.
Body Tint, Colouring and Marking
Skellyfish lack scales and most of their flesh is transparent, leaving them see-through and their skeleton visible.   They turn a milky white colour after death.
