Leons knighthood

Letters between Leon and his siblings after his knighthood.

Letter from Elaine Maxwell to Leon

Leon,
Father is letting me write this by candlelight—don’t tell Mother. I’m supposed to be studying the House lineage trees, but who cares how many cousins we have in the east? None of them ever write me.

Congratulations, on your knighthood we are all so happy for you, you deserve it. More importantly, did the princess like the embroidery I sent? I spent three days stitching that rose. If she didn't, please lie and say she did.

Willian says you’re probably too busy showing off your “glorious knighthood” to common folk. He’s pretending he’s not proud of you, but he is. I can tell—he's been practicing his archery even harder — maybe one day he’ll fight alongside you.

Write soon. And stay safe. You're too important to us to be reckless.

Love,
Elaine

Letter from Willian Maxwell to Leon

Leon,
You owe me three arrows. Last batch you sent were crooked. Don’t blame the fletcher—you picked them.

I’m glad they finally knighted you. Still think you should’ve let Sir Gerald beat you a few more times to stay humble, but hey, you always were stubborn.

Elaine misses you more than she’ll say. Mother too. Father talks about the day you left more than he should.

Don’t get soft up there. A castle’s comfort can dull a blade. Stay sharp.

—Willian

Leons reply

To Willian and Elaine,

Willian, next time you miss a shot, blame your arms, not the arrows. And tell Father I’m still training hard—Sir Gerald still lands a hit if I get too confident.

Elaine, the princess did love the embroidery. She even pinned it to her sash (though she turned red when I said you made it). The capital’s grand, but I miss the rolling hills, the rivers, the clean air, the way the fire crackles in the great hall.
I miss home.

You two keep writing. You remind me who I am.

—Leon
