Tavern, General

Almost every settlement has at least one tavern, though taverns do best when along well traveled routes and where they can sell good quality ale and food. Minimum staff is often the owner who will work the kitchen and their spouse who will take orders and deliver food.

Purpose / Function

This is a very common business, especially in Human dominated lands, and often functions as a restaurant, bar, hotel, and message board. Locals tend to use taverns as a place to unwind after a hard days work, eat a hot meal, and catch up with friends, while travelers use taverns as a place to rest, restock, and catch the latest news and gossip for the area.

Architecture

A standard tavern is often a building with a ground floor that is 2/3rds the dining area and 1/3rd the kitchen, while the upstairs consists of a handful of rooms available for rent. More successful taverns may also include a stable for travelers mounts, basement to store food/supplies, an office room, and more overall bigger to fit more rooms-for-rent and sitting space in the dining area.   Depending on how rich the tavern owner is, they may either live in their tavern or live in a nearby house they own.
Alternative Names
Taverns often have catchy and colorful names such as The Bubbling Ale, The Drunken Gnome, or The Laughing Dragon.
