Session 2: Burt Bell on Swift wings Report

General Summary

As the caravan slowly travels the patrolled roads of Grafagarth, they face a small outbreak of illness. Father decides to give some medicinal herbs and potions a shot, and enlists Thava to find some plants growing in the area. While the swampy lowlands of Grafagarth is foreign to the ranger, the highlands holds many weeds he knows from home. Father successfully manages to use half of the harvest for a few potions and remedies. Jared produces some medicinal shrooms, and uses his magic to detect who is afflicted and who will get well. He then cures some farmers and an elder at risk, spending a couple of spellslots.   As they ready themselves to exit through the new west gate of Grafagarth, Kurum alerts the party to the suspiciously quiet build site. Twig and Thava takes matters into their own paws/hands, and scouts from higher ground in the narrow valley. Anticipating an ambush, Father goes into sentry mode, while Nancy and Jared tries to calm and organize the travellers into defensive positions. Before they can get things in order properly, Jared gets a critically well timed look at the cliffs, and spots the rocks moving. As a large bugbear moved to bash in Thava's brains, Jared halts its movements by making the cliffside grow thick with foliage and shrooms. Surprised, Thava takes a heavy hit, before several goblins moves in from all sides.   Jared uses his spores and druidcraft to control the battlefield, while Nancy moves in to defend their rear, standing tall between civilians and charging worg-riders. Father, having installed a rapid crossbow arm, showers the enemy with bolts from a stationary position. Twig wrestles with bugbears in the cliffs, dodging attacks and parrying with fatal stabs, while Thava provides some heavy cover-fire for the caravan. As a hobgoblin releases cockatrices, Jared activates his full fungal form, all while summoning fire and roots to distrupt goblin archers. Nancy summons spiritual guardians in the name of Yondalla; ghostly halflings with gardening gear, which decimates the charging worgs. It takes the party a few rounds of attacks, but they manage to quickly fight back each and every front of the ambush, killing the final fleeing goblin within their sights.   As the dust settles, Jared, still in his fungal form, lets his infestation take a hobgoblin soldier's corpse, which had been mauled to death by Child. The fungal zombie rises with the help of Jareds newfound cordyceps control, and the mycelimancer tests the thrall out. Obeying his every command, the corpse proceeds to give its master all its valuables unpromted, including a goblin-drawn map. Twig and Thava leads the analysis, and finds that the goblins had detailed routes for enemy troupes, as well as info on kobold armies to the south. Jared and Thava lets Kurum copy the information for his own military to use, but only after they pressure him to give something back: a good word in with Ilver Snubb.   Left with the choice between going south and facing young dragons and armies of kobolds and who knows what else, or to try and make a dash directly to their destination, the party decides upon keeping their planned route.
