Too Good to be True

General Summary

The group arrives in Hemstetten which has been under the control of the Nightbrand Legion mercenary company for several weeks now. No-one knows how or why the mercenaries conquered the town, yet it’s indicated that the situation is currently peaceful behind the walls. Promising the Desert Crows to secretly spread the word about their services as well as agreeing to help the soldier Captain Evander to investigate the situation in the town, the party heads through the town gate into the unknown.

Suspiciously Normal

Right after the town’s main gate the travellers find themselves in Hemstetten’s new quarter, a residential area with a colourful mix of different cultural influences. The mercenary presence is tangible, with rough looking fighters patrolling the streets and manning the watchtowers throughout the town. The civilians don’t seem to be too bothered by them though and go about their daily lives just as usual. A little bewildered although also sensing a certain relief, the group decides that it should be safe enough to first of all take a well-deserved bath after weeks in the desert. Asking an elderly woman with a basket of flowers about such establishments (preferably not too expensive) she points them in the direction of the Bubbling Tub, according to her an affordable bathhouse comparable to the ones found in Minrathous. The group begins their journey through the town, passing the artisan quarter with dozens of workshops and stores, then the very busy market district and the lake in the centre of the town. Eventually they reach the old quarter which almost seems like an entirely different village within this village. Tevinter’s influence seems to be the strongest in this portion of the town – or at least the parts they saw so far. They follow the wooden signs that lead them to the Bubbling Tub bathhouse

Reunion at the Bathhouse

The party arrives at the Bubbling Tub eventually, which is located in a row of residential houses, all built from a similar white stone with dark grey door and window frames and black roofs. The area isn’t necessarily fancy and the majority of the houses is rather small, the bathhouse actually being the tallest building in the street. Both on the outside and the inside the establishment is beautifully decorated and kept very neat, there are a lot of plants both in flower pots as well as in planters hanging from the high ceilings. In the round entrance hall is a small bubbling fountain greeting weary travellers. The Tevinter woman managing the bathhouse welcomes the party warmly and explains what type of baths the Bubbling Tub offers. She also introduces them to her handmade soaps and oils, something, according to her, Hemstetten is famous for. After a short discussion and consideration the group agrees to just go for a swim in the large public swimming hall and passing on the private bathrooms. After buying some scented soap from the woman as well they store their belongings in the changing room, Mira sneakily hiding her smuggled-in throwing knife between the storage shelf and the wall, Max wrapping his axe in his clothes, and Harold transferring his knife to his boot. Some of them take the offer to rent a towel to wear for modesty, Max and Mira pass on that though and are the first to enter the large swimming hall which isn’t overly busy but not empty this morning. After everyone finally got clean of the dirt of fighting and travel it is time for swimming. Some of the party members simply relax a bit at the borders of the pool, Junius though for example goes right in for a swim in the refreshing water and then to pretending to be a mermaid. Jeska, who is actually a bit too short to even stand in the water, goes for something a bit more exciting: cannonballing into the pool she disrupts the serene mood of the swimming hall. She receives a few weird looks from the other guests – and enthusiastic applause from Auron, who suddenly appears out of nowhere sitting next to Maxfield at the edge of the pool. His clothes are simply in a pile on the ground next to him, and it takes everyone a moment to even process him suddenly being there, as if he’d been here the whole time. Eventually the group gathers, curious of course where Auron had been – and also asking him finally if it’s true what Maxfield had told them; that he was a spirit. Auron explains that he’s been with them the whole time, as if it was the most natural thing in the world – and again he confirms that yes, he is indeed a spirit that has been wandering this world for some time. He came here on his own terms, not being summoned by anyone, and he is intending to stay for the time being. Junius explains that spirits can sometimes manifest at their own will in places where the Veil is thin, yet they always risk turning into demons and being corrupted by the mortal world. They also have the ability to show themselves to others at will – or hide from their view for a while. In general though, despite his mysterious disappearance and not really sure still what to make of the fact that Auron is a spirit, the group is happy to see him again; especially Maxfield, very fond of the young man, is thrilled to have him around in this town.

New Leads

The group then remembers their promise to help the Desert Crows and Captain Evander, and so they decide that the bathhouse might actually be a good place to learn some new gossip. Claudia listens in on the conversations of two young women as well as an older couple, but neither of them seems to be talking about the current events; the women are planning a family reunion and the elderly couple is talking about the weather and old times. Maxfield decides to get out of the water to speak to another elder man who is sitting on a bench next to the pool. After a couple of minutes of friendly conversation and exchanging pleasantries the man mentions that the town’s temple recently burned down – and its priests with it, according to the rumours. He also comments that the pub “The Whip!” is serving a new version of its signature drink, and he recommends the place to Maxfield, as it’s popular with travellers and adventurers. Maxfield investigates a bit further about the temple and the general situation in the town. The man explains that the temple burned down shortly after the mercenaries arrived, and it might have been an accident, but there is no evidence for any versions of this story. In general though he says that the townspeople don’t mind the mercenary presence and that they can only profit from it, one way or the other. Either the situation will finally draw the capital’s attention to their town, or if not the mercenaries at least do a better job at protecting the town from the darkspawn than the guards did, alone by having a lot more manpower. He explains that Proconsul Servis wasn’t popular with the people here and that Vol Dorma left the town alone against the darkspawn, despite their pleas to send reinforcements and more guards. Then, during a particularly rough darkspawn attack the Nightbrand Legion appeared and fought off the tainted creatures –at the same time overthrowing the local government and seizing power over the town. The old Proconsul – a man sent from Vol Dorma a few years ago with no interest in the local region or people – allegedly is dead, as is most of his administration. Maxfield thanks the old man for this very valuable information and shares it with the others. Harold tries to investigate a bit further as well and decides to approach the elderly couple that’s swimming in the pool. They feel a bit pestered by him during their morning swim and don’t reply to his questions though, and has he keeps pressing and following them around they keep fleeing from him. The man Maxfield had talked to then leaves the swimming hall, and Auron decides that he’d like to play a little prank on his friends, following the man to the changing room. Before he can execute his plans though, someone else beats him to it: he and the old man surprise a young girl rifling through the clothing and bags stored in the changing room. Alarmed by the man’s yelling that there’s a little thief stealing their stuff the rest of the guests in the swimming hall hurry over to the changing room. The money of the two younger women as well as Claudia’s, Harold’s, and Junius’ purses are gone. Quickly they put on at least one layer of clothing before they chase after the girl, the manager of the Bubbling Tub pointing them in the right direction.

A little thief

Maxfield, Jeska, and Auron decide to wait at the bathhouse while Claudia, Mira, Harold, and Junius go after the kid. Junius though soon realizes that there’s no way he could keep up with his companions and decides to take things a bit slower, while the other three basically run a race against each other while chasing the girl. Claudia shows her impressive parkour skills, almost flying through the busy streets, and scares the living hell out of the girl, who yelps and starts running even faster as she sees her bounce off a building’s wall with a giant leap. Harold enters rage mode right away and it doesn’t take long until he catches up with Claudia, dashing through town like an unstoppable force. The two are having a very competitive race against each other suddenly, rather than following the girl, and eventually Mira takes the lead. The group definitely gets the attention of the people roaming the streets, yet they manage to not destroy anything or hurt anyone in their way. Then the girl disappears behind the wall separating the old quarter from the market. The three racing companions come to a halt and look around, right next to them the ruin of a formerly large building that has burned down to the ground. Harold is frantically looking around the area to find the girl, but eventually it is Claudia to spot her first in the ruin of the burned down building. She carefully approaches the girl who is not too happy that she was caught. Not answering any of Claudia’s questions at first and blocking all her approaches she even throws a big chunk of charcoal at her, but Claudia manages to block the attack without an issue. The girl withdraws even more, until Mira joins the conversation and compliments her on her successful heist at the bathhouse, which breaks the ice a little bit. Junius also catches up with them eventually and approaches the hesitant girl as well. He says that they really need their money back, but as the girl refuses, he threatens to tell her mom about what she’s doing, that she’s stealing people’s stuff. The girl eventually gives up and returns the money – and as a sign of good will Junius suggests that she can keep the two purses that don’t belong to any of them. The girl pockets the purses of the two women that were at the bathhouse, and slowly an actual conversation begins. She introduces herself as Misa, and she claims that she doesn’t even necessarily need the money, she just steals because she can and because it’s fun. Mira is very amused by this and approves. The group asks her if she can tell them a bit about what happened to the burned ruins they’re in at this point, but Misa asks for the group’s help with something first before she helps them. She explains that this building used to be Hemstetten’s temple and that it burned down not long after the mercenaries came. She is looking for a precious pink stone in the rubble and ashes, it used to be on one of the dragon statues in the temple. She would like to give it to her mother. Harold knows that the colour pink is often associated with Urthemiel, the dragon of beauty. He knows that all the statues usually stand in very particular positions within the temple, so it is relatively easy for him to locate the place where Urthemiel’s statue must have been before the fire. It only takes a little bit of digging in the ashes until Harold finds the gemstone Misa has been looking for for several day, and the little girl is truly impressed and thankful for the help and takes the stone. Now she is also willing to answer more of the group’s questions. She can’t give a lot of information on the mercenaries or the old proconsul, only that her mother hated him. According to her the Nightbrand Legion treats people in no way worse or differently than the guards used to – and they also never caught her stealing either. The party are actually the first to ever catch her, so this might explain why she was a bit miffed at first and not willing to cooperate. She says that the day the Nightbrand Legion came, she didn’t actually witness any events of the actual conquest of the town. She had been hiding in the basement according to her mother’s wishes, because before the mercenaries came a darkspawn attack had been imminent. She explains that the darkspawn used to attack the town a lot lately, but since the mercenaries’ arrival here no more darkspawn managed to get into the town. Misa then also talks a bit about the temple and the two priests that had been serving here. She liked them a lot, they always were friendly to the people and very smart. A lot of the townsfolk think that they probably burned in the fire and are nothing but scattered ashes, but Misa doesn’t think they are really dead. She mentions that they were good friends with Elma, the owner of an inn called “The Steaming Cauldron” in the market quarter, and the group decides that Elma might be a good person to talk to next about the recent events. The group thanks Misa for her help and answering their questions, then they return to the Bubbling Tub, where Jeska hands Claudia the rest of her equipment that she had left when starting to chase after the girl. They share the new information with their friends and are then interrupted by the two young women who had been swimming. Harold and Claudia lie to them and say they didn’t manage to find the girl sadly, so their money is gone. The two women leave disappointed with the exclamation: “Mum is going to be so mad at us!” Since it’s past lunchtime at this point the group decides to go to the Steaming Cauldron next to talk to Elma and get some food.

It always burns twice

The Steaming Cauldron is a very typical Anderfels-style building made from sandstone with wooden elements. It’s a modest building, definitely not a high-end hotel, but at lunch-time it is relatively busy. It is located on the same road the group had taken earlier on their way to the bathhouse, in the market quarter near the lake. As they enter the owner Elma, an Anderfels woman of heavy build, in her 40s, fiery red hair worn in a bun, is currently talking to a few other customers, but she is soon ready to take everyone’s orders for lunch. The menu is short and simple, and a lot of the foods listed are made with rice and fried vegetables, cheeses, and a lot of spices. A local drink is included in the price of a meal, which the travellers are very grateful for. They all settle for a simple bowl of spiced rice with chunks of undefined vegetables in them – it’s not fancy, but hearty and filling. Jeska and Junius are taken aback a bit by the sheer amount of spice in it though, looking at each other in desperation with watery eyes and runny noses, and Jeska asks for a glass of milk to get rid of the burning sensation in her mouth. Most of them drink a local beer brand, Claudia tries the rice wine, which is nice and strong. Junius is delighted to see that this inn serves tea, and he is even more pleasantly surprised at the good quality of the drink served. Hemstetten is famous for its soap, its tea, and its spices, according to Elma, and they export a great deal of all of these to the rest of the Imperium. The farmland on the steep hills surrounding the town is very fertile and watered with a complicated but effective irrigation system, most likely one-of-a-kind in the Anderfels. The group has a look around in the main room of the inn and among the townsfolk enjoying their lunch they also spot a group of mercenaries at a nearby table that seem to be having a very good time but are minding their own business. The loud and infectious laugh of one of them is entertaining everyone around them as well, and since they appear to be sufficiently distracted the group decides to ask Elma questions about the events in town. The things the owner of the inn has to share at first are in accord with everything else they have heard so far: the Proconsul wasn’t very well-liked, the mercenaries are doing a good job overall at keeping the darkspawn out, Vol Dorma left the town alone against the darkspawn threat, and the temple burned down shortly after the mercenaries arrived. What strikes the group as suspicious is that Elma doesn’t seem bothered by the fate of the priests, despite Misa telling them that they used to be close. They also notice that during their conversation Elma keeps throwing nervous glances over to the mercenaries at the table, as if she was scared or hiding something. Questioned a bit further about the Proconsul she explains that he had been raising the export taxes to a ridiculous degree which ruined some of the smaller local businesses. She confirms also that Servis has been killed by the mercenaries the day they seized power. Personally she isn’t upset that he’s gone. The group asks a bit further if the mercenaries want anything in return for their services, because so far all of what they’re doing seems way too good to be true. Elma admits that so far they haven’t asked for anything and that they pay for their bills and the food they eat. In general they don’t start more trouble than the guards used to. She is also aware though that this might not continue on like this forever. A few members of the Proconsul’s administration allegedly joined the mercenaries – the others were killed. And the Nightbrand Legion is recruiting everyone interested, especially from the younger and more impressionable generation among the town’s residents, so their numbers are growing with every day. Before the group decides to leave to have a look at the “The Whip!” pub the man in the bathhouse had mentioned, Maxfield asks Elma if she happens to know if anyone had troubles with leaving the town – be it travellers or townsfolk. Again she is getting very nervous, throwing glances in the direction of the mercenaries. She says that she wouldn’t know of anyone having such troubles and that several travellers came and left again since the mercenaries seized power. As she says this though she writes a little note that she secretly passes over to Maxfield by hiding it under the cloth she uses to clean the counter. The note reads “Come back later. Please.”, and the group is mildly alarmed, but for Elma’s sake they keep their composure. Since Elma can’t speak freely at the moment with the mercenaries present in the inn they ask her for the directions to the “The Whip!” and bid their farewells before leaving the Steaming Cauldron. They plan to return later to figure out what it is that Elma is so afraid of.

Auron’s Quest

On the way to the pub the group passes through the market place, taking in the scenery around them, and also using the time to ask Auron a few more questions, since their reunion was cut short in the morning by the thief at the bathhouse. Auron first of all hopes that at the pub they’re going to be serving coffee, because he’d really like to drink a cup and hasn’t had one in a while. Junius scoffs at this a little, trying to convince Auron that tea is a good (if not better) alternative. Auron insists on preferring coffee though. Upon being asked he explains that he’s been in this world for about three or four years (he still struggles a bit with human’s concept of time though), but he mentions that “she” had always told him when a year had passed. “She”, as it turns out, is a young woman named Aurora Malva that Auron used to travel with all this time before he met the group in Schwarzstein. Aurora and he were separated a while ago, and ever since he has been trying to find her again, so far though without success. One day she was suddenly gone without a trace, but he doesn’t know the name of the place where he had last seen her. She apparently is a mage from Minrathous who had been studying the Blight – and he had scared her quite a bit when he manifested in this world. She was very sad at the time he met her, but with him there she became happier again. He remembers that when she was done studying in one place they travelled to the next together, for years. Mira can understand how someone like that would have been interesting to Auron, considering that he is a spirit of Curiosity. He reminds the group again of the story he had told at the campfire about a week ago – Aurora being the hero that came to the Fade to fight a demon, and him curiously following her back to the world of the mortals. Mira then also wants to know why Auron took the shape of a half-elf – and if he chose his name himself or if it was given to him. Auron explains that when Aurora entered the Fade, a memory manifested next to her of a half-elf. A lot of positive emotions were tied to that memory, the half-elf was someone important to her, so Auron took a similar shape in the hopes of gaining Aurora’s trust more easily and becoming her friend. Aurora only knew him as “Curiosity” though; he chose his name himself, on purpose very much resembling hers, after she disappeared. He hoped the similar name might draw attention and help him find her once he arrived in Minrathous – which has been his destination the whole time (he got a bit side-tracked along the way though). Mira isn’t impressed by the fact that a lot of their paths seem to be leading to Minrathous, and the group wonders if Aurora Malva might be a Magister – yet she sounds almost too friendly to be one.

Probably the best pub in all of Anderfels

Eventually the group comes to a halt at an intersection – and had the The Whip! pub been a typical building they probably would have walked passed it so immersed in their conversation. If The Whip! is anything though, it’s extraordinary. Built probably by hand by someone who doesn’t really know much about building houses or architecture, the two-story building is supported and held up seemingly only just by an abundance of posts and support-beams all around its exterior. The door, the windows, the roof, the stones and woods it’s made from, everything is crooked and looks kind of makeshift and randomly put together. A large, hand painted sign nailed to the outside wall of the upper floor reads “THE WHIP!” and depicts a painted drunken skull being split in half by an actual whip attached onto the sign. The interior of the pub is similarly… unique. More pillars and posts support the wobbly looking ceiling, from which broken mugs and bottles are hanging as decoration. The floor is covered in several layers of old and holey rugs, completely discoloured from years of being stepped on. A hint of dust is in the air and several simple chandeliers light up the place, because the windows are too small to let enough light in. Across from the entrance is the large counter spanning almost the entire width of the room, which is filled to the brim with guests – civilians and mercenaries alike. Behind the counter is a man, fitting in this place like no-one else would, a bit of a mad scientist vibe about his outward appearance. As he finishes serving guests already waiting he then greets the party and welcomes them to “probably the best pub in all of Anderfels”. He asks them what they’d like to drink, listing tons and tons of options. The wall behind him is lined with a huge shelf with bottles and mugs in all colours and shapes, neatly organized. He introduces himself as Frederick, co-owner of The Whip!, and Harold is the first to order “something strong”. Frederick knows exactly what Harold needs and serves him a glass of rum from his hometown, which the veteran soldier is delighted about. Frederick is very energetic and engaging, and he can convince Jeska and Mira to try the pub’s signature drink of the same name: The Whip! It’s a special concoction he and his brother Roderick have been working on and refining for about 15 years now. Recently they’ve reached the next stage of the recipe and would love to serve it to more people to see how well it is received. Mira and Jeska watch him slightly anxiously as he pours together all sorts of drinks and mixtures, and a variety of chemical reactions take place right in front of them. Claudia, watching the whole procedure curiously, tries to determine what exactly it is he puts in the drink, but she can’t notice anything weird about it. It’s a lot of different alcohols and spicy smelling syrups, most of them probably homebrewed. Maxfield in the meantime happily sips his Hemstetten Sunny Mead, and Junius leans back to enjoy the show. Auron is very sad that they don’t sell coffee here, only alcoholic drinks. Frederick says that he himself isn’t much of a coffee drinker, more his brother Roderick – but as he goes to check if they maybe have some left in their private supply it seems like Roderick just drank the last bit they had, leaving Auron even more devastated. Harold tells Frederick that he could actually try and combine coffee and alcohol – coffee liquors are a thing after all. Frederick freezes a moment, staring blankly at him, then he rushes off to the room behind the counter to probably write down this idea. He returns, and Junius mentions that he could also try using tea, and so he disappears yet again to take notes and rummage about in the backroom. As he emerges again, the “The Whip!” drink is finally ready to be served after resting for a while. He pours the liquid into two glasses, one for Jeska and Mira each, revealing that the liquid has a really dark, almost black colour with little sparkling particles in it. Before they start to drink he lights the drinks on fire with a match, reminds them though to blow the flames out before drinking, otherwise it might end badly. With the fire out again, the top section of the drink has turned into a rich red colour. Mira and Jeska look at each other in a “here goes nothing” kind of fashion, then Jeska carefully takes a sip while Mira downs the drink in one go. Jeska feels like she’s just been slapped in the face, bit in the tongue, and is now burning on the inside – she instantly regrets her decision and the kick of the drink makes her fall off her barstool backwards. Frederick leans over the counter a bit worried to check in on her, apologizing and offering a free drink on the house; the two of them were some of the first guests to try this new version of the drink and he wasn’t quite sure how strong it would be. Jeska simply asks for some water and Frederick brings her a tin cup filled with the lukewarm liquid – but it’s better than nothing. Mira on the other hand is a bit more used to alcohol probably, after years of being a sailor, and while at first the sensation of the drink is unpleasant, it does taste very interesting and good. It is strong, no doubt, but the combination of spices and flavours is truly on of a kind and leaves her feeling invigorated. Maxfield then downs what’s left of Jeska’s drink and he has to agree with Mira, that this is unusual but good stuff. Once everyone has calmed down again and found a seat at the bar the group decides to question Frederick a bit about the situation in the town as well. He seems surprised to hear that Vol Dorma’s private army waits in front of the gate for orders on how to deal with the Nightbrand Legion. He says that he’s not really up-to-date with the outside world, his brother Roderick being the more outgoing one. Roderick had apparently told him also that the Proconsul was indeed dead, his body hanging from the walls of the castle in the old quarter of town. In general though he doesn’t mind the mercenaries’ presence, they do a good job and pay their bills, even if sometimes he has to remember them more or less often about it. He says though that it was similar with some of the guards – and similarly they also step in if someone starts a fight in his bar (including himself). Frederick is also aware that probably this situation won’t continue on forever like this – currently the mercenaries are living off the gold they plundered from the castle, using it to recruit new people too, but he thinks that sooner or later they might want more from the townsfolk. That is, if Vol Dorma doesn’t indeed intervene before it comes to it, but Frederick doesn’t have high hopes that they will. He says if Vol Dorma doesn’t need Hemstetten then the village doesn’t need Vol Dorma either. The group asks if he would know of anyone who would want to leave the village, to which he says that the priests sure would have loved to leave had they known what was coming for them. He thinks the fire at the temple wasn’t an accident, but there’s no evidence. Then again he says he’s not a very religious person anyway, but there are people that are sad about what happened, as it was the town’s only temple. Eventually, when the group just keeps asking more questions, Frederick decides to get his brother, who’s working in the backroom in their lab. He is, according to him, more outgoing and more informed about the events in the town. A few minutes pass and then Roderick comes out – who looks exactly the same as Frederick, same clothes, same everything really, except that he’s wearing a grey, misshapen hat. The group thinks that Frederick might not have a brother after all and this would just fit too well with this eccentric establishment. “Roderick” nevertheless introduces himself normally, as if he truly hadn’t met them before, and tries to answer some more questions the group has. He says that he knows someone who saw the Proconsul’s corpse hanging from the castle wall, and by now it’s probably not a pretty sight anymore. He hasn’t gone there to look at it for himself, but he knows that it had been Killian to announce the Proconsul’s death. The leader of the mercenaries settled down in the castle from where he manages everything, but he’s seen around town now and then as well. Roderick also knows of the private army outside the town, but they haven’t been there for long, so word probably hasn’t spread to all corners of Hemstetten just yet. And just like Frederick he also thinks that the soldiers might just be ordered to leave again without interfering, because so far Hemstetten has been left alone against the darkspawn anyway. He says that in Vol Dorma a fortress of sorts is being built, to protect the Imperial Highway better, and the construction drew in the attention of the darkspawn. Vol Dorma didn’t have a hard time fighting them off, and the scattered horde then usually came over to Hemstetten, as it’s one of the closest remaining settlements in the area. So it was Vol Dorma’s fault in a way even that the town was attacked so often lately, but they still didn’t bother sending more guards or soldiers to fight off the darkspawn – and so the Nightbrand Legion took their chances when they were in the area one day, seeing that the guards wouldn’t be able to hold the town against two attacking forces. They conquered Hemstetten with ease after dealing with the darkspawn. The party thanks Roderick for his help and information, and they decide to investigate the town a bit more – and maybe find a way to talk to Killian himself, if they can find a way into the castle without causing trouble. As they want to leave The Whip! though a group of mercenaries that had been drinking here as well stands in their way and stops them from leaving. A man with a spear blocks the exit and announces “You’ve been asking an awful lot of questions about us. I think Killian would like to speak to you.”
