Werebeasts
Or Thiriothrope, the general term for all creatures that transform from (usually hairless, usually thumb-having) biped into a beast under the light of the full moon.
At the beginning of their existence, they were graced with the ability to transform intentionally and at will, a gift granted by the bestial spirits of the world that inhabited them.
(Definitely a ritual involving blood granting them the blessing)
The story of the moon madness curse is old enough to have been lost to history. Versions of it exist, most of them have one side or the other being evil or cruel, many with the wrong characters and creatures. No one remembers the item nor the war.
The werebeasts had been given a gift, a sacred mirror, by their High Spirit. They kept it and cherished it, and, in some event that I haven't made up yet, lost it. (I think it was stolen and the thief was killed before the beasts could find it, maybe underwater or something, got washed downriver like things get.)
A traitor got his hands on the mirror and gave it to the Goddess of the Moon as a favor, as he was her lover.
The werebeasts found them and asked for it back only to be called liars and rebuffed.
So they attacked, and the mirror was destroyed, along with the acolytes.
And the moon goddess stole their control over their ability. They would no longer be intelligent when transformed. Their children would bear their curse. They would only transform under certain circumstances (I think when frightened for their life and the full moon). When transformed, they would become feral and aggressive, even to those they loved, and each other.
(The Cat wanted to keep the old story that the Werebears escaped that fate, having decided to skip out on the raid against the Moon's clan.)
