Archivist
The head keeper of a Scribe Repository, an Archivist oversees the overall living and continuations of the Tower they live in.
Pre-Scattering, they worked their way up the ranks from lowly Scribe (the one that does the writing) to Bookkeeper to Librarian(I can't actually remember these two, I need to look that back up in my notes, sorry.)
Day to day is basically just making sure no one has died, and investigating why and how it happened if anyone did.
They live at the top of the tower, because of course they do, but they very rarely have anything to do with the books or many besides the Librarians.
The traditional way to earn the ranks is to work. Scribes copy the most books the best, the bookkeepers sort and organize best in the biggest areas, the librarians maintain a working knowledge of their parts of the tower until they can't not know the shit and spread all the way out.
The appointment is lifetime, but by the time you earn the rank, short of the longer-lived Elves, you're likely to only have twenty years left anyway. If one is showing signs of mental decay, they can be forcibly retired, but this is usually regarded as bad form and they will instead 'fall ill' and retire. (The archivist is usually in on this, but that isn't to say it hasn't happened before.)
The first one belonged to The First Scribe Repository in Yu. As that was the only tower at the time, there could be only one. Post-Scattering, the much-more-numerous towers are spread out.
Occasionally, they will gather and meet to discuss their respective things, they do keep in contact with a Drawing Board.
