Warp Gates

Warp gates are ancient traveling devices created by the Precursors.

There are two different types of warp gates. Teleport Gates and their much larger counter part, Rift Gates.

Teleport Gates

Resembling real Tori Gates, teleport gates transport the user from one gate to another through space. It's unknown if there's a spacial limit to how far apart these can be, as you can use the gate from Geyser rock in the very south all the way to Gol and Maia's Citadel in the North, so it's at the very least, very far, and covers the majority of the LEA (Major Time Periods) Elves' needs, with one gate in every major settlement.

Teleport gates seem to come in a standard size, with only a couple or so that diverge from the standard, such as the huge one seen on the Dark Maker Ship Jak meets with Errol on.

However, this specific gate also differentiates from the others in that it leads Jak and Daxter to the gate outside Spargus, manifesting in the desert versus through another gate.1

While the majority of teleport gates are used by elves, precursors and dark makers, there is one located in a lurker village within the Dig Site, however it's unclear if this was put there before by the elves or after by the lurkers.

Rift Gates

Rift gates work like teleport gates, however instead of traveling through space they travel through time.

The rift gate seen outside Samos' hut, that once opened, begins the Metal Head Invasion

Either they are powered with power cells, or the doors that the rift gate was hidden behind was what needed the power cells, making it unclear what powers them specifically2.

The doors hiding away the Rift Rider to be used to go back to Haven once Jak/Mar has grown up

It's also unclear what exactly is necessary for using a rift gate, as the rift rider is used in both instances (to Haven and to Sandover), but as seen in the above picture, there is a mechanism behind the rift rider, whereas when it's used to head back in time from Kor's nest, only the rift rider is present. That may be because the one in Haven is not open until eco is sent between the mechanism and the gateway, whereas the one in Kor's nest is already opened.

The Rift Rider built by Keira

The Precursor seen at the end of Jak 2 also enters the gate without a rift rider at all3.

After the conversation with Jak, the precursor flies right into the gateway.

Head Canons

  1. Is this a more advanced teleport gate? It's found actively on a dark maker ship, not in precursor ruins being used by elves.
  2. Inside the rift looks like dark eco, considering that light eco gives Jak the ability to slow time, perhaps there's a specific ratio of dark and light eco to create a worm hole through time.
  3. Could be chalked up to precursors having more inherent power/eco abilities than elves typically do. - Or: The rift rider was originally crafted in Haven by Keira, and then sent back in time with Samos and a young Jak, where it was hidden and then used to return Samos and Jak (along with bringing Keira and Daxter) from Sandover back to Haven. So, was the rift rider only there because of Keira thinking it was needed because that's what she first used to get to Haven?

Inventor(s)

Precursors originally invented these, however if it was a group effort or ascribed to a specific individual is unknown.
