The Rifting of Lusk

The Rifting of Lusk was a natural disaster that devastated and shaped the region where the once powerful city of Lusk had once existed. The city had been home to some of the greatest wizards, most notably the wizards of the College of Eternal Wisdom. Nearly all was lost when a chasm split the city devouring the center and seperating the rest by a one hundred mile long split a mile across and which appears to have no bottom. The became known as the Lusk Rift.   The phenomenon started as a small crack the center of town which grew steadily for an entire week. Initially, individuals were able to step over it but by the end of the week several wagon wheels had been shattered trying to role over it and one horse had been put down after breaking a leg. The wizards of the towns came to investigate but were unable to ascertain the cause or even the depth of the hole. Several cautious wizards advised people move away from the centre until more could be learned, but nothing happened at the site for several more months and people's curiosity gave way to the business of life.   On 2 Yhi 96 NE the rifting began. Little is known about the actual event and we are only able to piece together pieces of data related to second hand accounts. I was, unable to find anyone who was there, but alas the story goes as such.   There was a great howl that came up from the city, natural but unknown to any beings ears, it rankled everyone and set teeth on edge. The sound was joined by a chorus of screams from the denizens of Lusk and the ground gave a great heave as if exhaling. Then came the breaking sound, the voluminous crack and the city began to push outward from the centre as the chasm grew stretching north to south. Buildings toppled into the new abyss as it grew and quickly the screams were silenced. When the rifting was finished to the west a single building stood an old barracks that had long been controlled by a farmer for storing grains. On the west nearly 10 buildings still remained, just butting up against the rift. The city of Lusk, was no more.   Those few that survived, an estimated total of 100 fled the city and it was quickly claimed by dark denizens. People who formed cults around the rift believing it had been created by some otherworldly being from the Underdark.
