The Hours

“The Lightbringer’s Bell brings the dawn, the Warrior the day. The Labourer rings out to work, the Maiden rings to play. The Dark chases away the light and drives the sun away.” - Children's Rhyme   Each day in Alvez is divided into 5 segments, called hours or bells. Each bell is divided into four chimes, except for the Dark Hour, which contains 8. The start of the hour is heralded by the long tolling of different material bells, which repeat for shorter sessions on each subsequent chime.   The Hours are as follow, with each of the daylight bells corresponding to one of the gods of the Faith:
  • The Dark Hour (Roughly from sunset to sunrise)
  • The Lightbringer's Hour (Early morning)
  • Elouan's Bell is made of crystal with a glowing clapper
  • The Warrior's Hour (Morning to Noon)
  • The Warrior's bell is made of polished bronzesteel
  • The Labourer's Hour (Noon to mid-day)
  • The Labourer's Bell is made of tin.
  • -The Maiden's Hour (Mid-Day to Sunset)
  • The Maiden's bell is a small silver bell, the most expensive in most belfries
  • Bellringers

If a town can support it, a belltower is usually added to the Church or other significant structure. In the North, these are traditionally in the towers of a church, while in the South, they are constructed in separate campanile. When a full belltower cannot be afforded, many towns will opt for a smaller Rod ar Fortun - The Wheel of Fortune, located in the Church or civic building.   The bellringer is a traditional role assigned to an individual in a community to keep time and ring the bell at appropriate intervals. Often times, this falls to a Korrigan, with sure footed Teuz commonly associated with the role. Some have managed the difficult task of automating the process with complex clockwork mechanisms, often shown as a sign of wealth and prowess.
