Basic Information

Anatomy

The plant is marked by smooth-edged oval leaves with waxy white berries in clumps of 2 to 6. The plant is typically found in clumps high in the canopy of its host, but in particularly aggressive cases, it will replace the entire canopy with its own structure.

Genetics and Reproduction

The plant spreads via seeds eaten and deposited by birds. Covered in a sticky substance, it is left on tree branches, where it is able to take root.

Ecology and Habitats

The most sacred of the plants are found atop Oak trees, although the species itself is able to take host of a number of local plantlife.

Dietary Needs and Habits

The mistletoe is a parasitic evergreen, attaching to host trees and shrubs to extract water and nutrients. Its leaves are capable of photosynthesis but this is made redundant once it has properly integrated with its host.

Uses, Products & Exploitation

Mistletoe is harvested by the druids and used as a base in many tonics, salves and potions, ranging in purpose from poison-cures to cures for impotence. It is prized as a fertility aid. Despite this however, mistletoe is a toxic plant, although rarely fatal in adults, and inexperienced and dubious apothecaries have been known to use higher than suggested dosages. Mistletoe tea, made from the leaves and berries, is especially dangerous.

Geographic Origin and Distribution

Mistletoe is found throughout the Western Realms from the Golden Sea to the Island of Logres, most heavily in the North. A related species is found along Slaver's Coast.

Conservation Status

Mistletoe is considered one of the most sacred plants of the druids and care is taken to properly cultivate and protect the plant, which is commonly found throughout the Western Realms. It is considered especially sacred when it grows atop Oak trees, and these are specifically cared. In some areas controlled by the Southern Church, the plant is harvested and burned to quell Druidic practices.
