Gwele-kloz (Box-Bed)

A traditional furniture found in the Duchy of Letha. These are often prized possessions and used to show off the relative wealth, success and family history of its owner.

Utility

The Gwele-Kloz is an enclosed bed resembling a cupboard surrounded on all sides by wooden walls and accessed via a door, sliding panel or curtain. The bed is raised off the floor to keep it from dirt or moisture. A set of drawers are often attached to the raised base for the storage of linens and clothing, which can be used as steps to access the upper level on a 2-level variant.   The raised and enclosed nature of these beds provides some warmth and privacy in the often one room dwellings, as well as providing safety from animals, ranging from livestock kept in the home to wolves that might attack in the night.   The bed is usually placed against the wall of a central chimney, gaining warmth from the fireplace in the next room.

Manufacturing

Gwele-kloz are created by hand in a thriving cottage industry, especially among the Teuz Korrigan, typically created on commission or by their ultimate users. Cost of this furniture depends on the materials and complexity of the finished product. Most commonly, oak or chestnut wood is used in the construction.

Social Impact

Gwele-kloz and their commonly paired counterpart, the Bank-Tossel, are a fixture and focal point of Lethan homes, serving as the most highly decorated object for most. Gwele-kloz are often part of a bridal dowry.   During funerals, the bed is drapped with white curtains and cleaned, acting as a sort of memorial shrine for the duration.
Access & Availability
Gwele-kloz are very common, especially in the Duchy of Letha, where they are a central feature of many houses across the social strata. All but the poorest hovels, even small villages deep in the ar goat, can afford at least a minimal Gwele-Kloz.
Complexity
The complexity and craftsmanship of Gwele-Kloz varies widely, from simple boxes with unadorned panels to elaborately decorated works of art with ample storage with shelves, cabinets, and either entire second chambers for additional beds or storage.   Teuz build Gwele-Kloz, well regarded masterworks, contain unexpectedly roomy interiors, with ample space for storing sheets, blankets, linens and such things.   At its most simple, a Gwele-Kloz is a simple box, elevated off the floor and containing a bed behind a closable panel, which can swing or slide. Often a large drawer or cabinet is located beneath the bed chamber, used for storing quilts and linens. Some complex variants exist, with two chambers atop each other. With large families, children typically sleep in this upper chamber.
