Arcadian Brassbeak

Basic Information

Anatomy

Arcadian Brassbeak are small birds, roughly the size of a carrion crow. They are known for possessing almost metallic elements in their feathers, beaks and claws. Their feathers are stiff and sharp, and some can be ejected in times of distress, striking an opponent like a dart or knife. Their beaks and talons are similarly sharp, capable of tearing little by little, through all but the highest quality chainmail and even platemail.

Ecology and Habitats

Native to the wetlands of the Sea of Wine, Arcadian Brassbeak prefer swamps and mires, thriving in damp, warm climates. They typically nest in trees in large flocks.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Arcadian Brassbeak largely devour the carrion left by larger predators, but are capable of mobbing intruders, typically devouring the flesh after the creature expires.

Additional Information

Social Structure

Arcadian brassbeaks reproduce quickly, living in large flocks.

Uses, Products & Exploitation

While some have attempted to make use of the razor-feathers of these creatures, they become too brittle to use after a period of time. Initially, and in some cases currently, they are employed as songbirds, but can be released as a defensive measure as well

Geographic Origin and Distribution

Arcadian Brassbeak were originally found in the swamps of the Sea of Wine, but their colourful plumage and exotic traits made them a prized target by traders, who brought them to populate menageries from Per-Ys to Ubar. This proved ill-advised and escaped birds created invasive colonies throughout Kornôgel, their aggressive tendencies allowing them to supplant other creatures. They can be found throughout the continent and Fortunate Isles, but are most common in Tolosa, Navarre and Southern Akitania.

Symbiotic and Parasitic organisms

Arcadian Brassbeak are often found living near Ellén Trechend, feasting off carrion killed by the larger predator. They are roused easily and mob intruders, making it difficult to approach the mound-caves of the Ellén Trechend.
