Clockworks Physical / Metaphysical Law in Alvarica | World Anvil

Clockworks

Clockworks changed our world. They revolutionised industry. Clockworks, unlike human labourers, repair easily, never sleep, never eat, and obey perfectly. The power of the Clockwork drove forward technology exponentially, and today they are the backbone of the world's industrial nations.   The Clockwork was one of the earliest inventions following the emergence of Quintessence. The impressive advancement should be credited to Lord Garon Reyela of Ma'trine. He pioneered channeling Quintessence through a Saavon crystal to create a programmable intelligence. The exact process is a patent of Reyela Works, which has granted the Reyela family immense wealth in the years since their ancestor's invention.

The Technology

Clockworks are on the most basic level, a clockwork body which is powered, wound and controlled by a Saavon crystal. They are usually, but not necessarily, humanoid. The crystal is powered by an infused crystal, which gives it an innate intelligence that has been programmed by the creators to perform actions required of it and obey commands by designated masters.

Evolution

Clockworks vary greatly in form and function. The first model SR0.1 was a multipurpose unit designed primarily for manual labour, and saw success. It was pioneered by Tanash Ore, who utilised it to great effect in their iron mines. With confidence bolstered by Tanash's glowing reviews, Clockworks were adopted across Ma'trine by 4760 HF.   In the following years consumer forces saw demand for a personal unit rise, and the SB1000 was released. An elegant, if primitive Clockwork designed to serve drinks and mix cocktails, with a copper and bronze skin. The SR4.2 revolutionised labour Clockworks in 4764, with new quintessence-improved steel skeleton that allowed impressive physical strength.   The government of Ma'trine commissioned Reyela Works to create the BDB8 in 4771, recognising the possibilities of an obedient, powerful military Clockwork. It was equipped with newly invented Yart Industries rotary canons, and proved effective upon initial deployment in the invasion of Aysdeu. The initial shock devastated the Aysdeu morale, but as the combat extended their slow speed proved an extreme disadvantage. BDB8 were difficult to move, transport and entirely incapable in difficult terrain and though the war was won, BDB8 proved a costly disadvantage in the long run.   Major reform was undertaken to respond to the lessons learned in the Aysdeu War. The FHM-52 was released in 4780, as a light-infantry option, with new Aimeo Trust Quintessence-infused armour. It allowed Clockworks to be far lighter than ever below, and also led to the development of the Saviour-11 personal bodyguard and the Glitter Boot, or GLRT-B00 heavy artillery Clockwork.   Reyela Industries subsidiary Viene introduced the SER/DAME-8 to market in 4786; using a fabric mesh designed to closely emulate human skin they achieved the most human Clockwork to date. It is marketed it as personal servant.
