West Ocean
Also known as the Frontier Seas, the West Ocean borders the Sea of Eternal Calm and creeps along the western shores of Tal Asir, Galliand and Althea. It is the last of the “tamed” waters of Valtira as its currents are the last predictable and relatively calm waters sailors who are venturing westward are likely to see. There are a few settlements on the larger islands here with the largest being Rogue’s Landing which was originally settled by pirates. This town has no authority above it and stands as the last civilized bastion in the west before the great Serpent Rock. There are many small towns in the isles that dot this sea, with mostly human, some elvish and even rarer, Wood Dwarf settlements. All these towns are nominally claimed by other nations, but are for the most part autonomous, however all answer to the Port Authority of Rogue’s Landing which serves as the strongest peace keeping force in the area.
Serpent Rock is the largest landmark in the ocean and can be seen from many leagues away. It is riddled with holes from which water cascade down from and the many passages within are a dark maze of swiftly moving water. This dreadful labyrinth is the only known way into the Westward Current, one of the two currents which exist in the Sea of Eternal Calm and the only one that carries ships west. Adventurers and sailors must maneuver through the maze of canals within Serpent Rock and hopefully find one of the three exit tunnels which leads westward, all others lead to dead ends, back east or become conduits blasting the unfortunate through the upper holes in the mountain and careening through the sky before crashing back into the sea, perhaps even into the Sea of Eternal Calm; a death sentence.
Other than the way westward, this ocean is also a pirate’s safe haven with no strong presence from the world powers save for Pelagia, but they only get involved if their western coasts are threatened. Trade exists here mostly between the western reaches of Thalassia and Pelagia and many unwary merchants have met their end at the hands of the many outlaws who call this ocean home.
