Common Combi-weapons

Comi-weapons are an artifact of civilizations stuck in the transition from steel melee weapons to gun powder projectile weapons. Because of the lack of coal and oil on this world technology has been stuck in a 16th century era level of technological development. Combi-weapons require both the martial proficiency and the firearms proficiency or they are used at disadvantage.   Some examples players may find or have constructed by a gunsmith who specializes in these weapons.

Sword Gun: this weapon is a long or bastard sword with a small single shot pistol tucked into the hilt. The user has a safety in the guard to keep it from going off accidentally. Generally used to knock down charging targets with reach weapons like pike-men. Often a status item for nobles or war chiefs.   Axe Musket: this weapon has a short barrel musket with no flange made of solid metal and a double headed steel axe on the top and bottom to help index the shot. Generally used to blast at crowds of light armored attackers, and is often a weapon used by a noble's guard rather than a noble themselves.   Maul Gun: This war club is one cast piece of bronze like a swivel cannon. because it is cast rather than assembled from pieces the Maul Gun is more durable and can be used to beat opponents. An Orc invention it is a prized status symbol for Orc war chiefs or city leaders.   Shield Gun: This is typically a steel and wood medium shield with a pistol pointing out perpendicular to the shield, and fired with the right hand. A Gnomish variation has the gun parallel with the shield and a complicated trigger that can be fired by the left hand. In this type the gun is fired as a reaction, but the AC bonus of the shield is ignored by that attack.

Mechanics & Inner Workings

Generally it is a small caliber pistol fit into the shaft, hilt or guard of the weapon, usually single shot. these are flint lock triggered guns, so they are used once at short range then the aggressor closes for the melee.

Manufacturing process

The weaponsmith will often forge the melee weapon first then make measurements and adjustments to fit the pistol components. finally the handle or grip will be fitted so it can be comfortably used in combat. This final part is the what scraps most weapons, as the combination was not well balanced for melee or aiming the gun.

History

For the last 400 years steel and gunpowder production have become stable throughout most of the major civilized areas allowing for the proliferation of guns and steel weapons. Most pistols fire lead or brass balls hand chambered. Cased ammunition such as rifled or bullet shaped are extremely rare unique weapons.

Significance

Not the province of the common foot soldier most combi-weapons are possessed by wealthier officers, nobles, adventurers or merchants. They denote status and are often bought paired with show-or dress-armor for public occasions, but these weapons are made for combat.
