The Weapon of the Angel of the Eternal Flame

Appearance

The blade is a polished black, enchanted with sigils that glow a bright orange when wielded by a user of the Eternal Flame. A fuller goes through the center, making the blade lighter due to the reduced amount of material. The crossguard is of simple design but it has an engraving of a dragon on the face pointing toward the blade. The handle's leather wrap still looks and feels the same despite the millenniums since its creation. In general, the sword is quite light and long enough to allow one handed or two handed combat.

History

The weapon was first created for King Rueven Thesys of the Cortavin Empire as a gift in celebrating his reign. It sat as a memento and nothing more until the Cortavin and Phoenix Empire met in the 1st century TD. Whe King Novis aided the Kentori in their war against the Avin, he was given this sword by Rueven's wife, Pavina Thesys. This was a shock to many since it was seen as a symbol of the King's authority to some. However, he let Novis keep it as a sign of future friendship. At first, Novis didn't want the sword since it wasn't his to keep. When King Thesys died, he was forced to keep it.

It stayed by Novis' side until his death in 1 TD during the Human-Kentori War. To the rest of the world, it disappeared along his and Pavina's body, no doubt sucked into the portal that opened during the final battle. However, that was far from the truth. Ignis, the Eternal Flame, had taken the sword and kept it with him until the Demon War. When Gallus, the second Angel of the Eternal Flame, came to turn the tide of the war, he wielded this weapon along with his iconic shield. He wielded that weapon until the end of the Demon War when Ignis took it back upon Gallus' death.

With High Dragons hunting him, Ignis was forced to leave a piece of the Eternal Flame within the sword before sealing it away in the North. It resides in a warded tomb honoring King Novis since the 12th century. It waits for the day that Ignis or another Angel will come to wield it.

Mechanics & Inner Workings

There are sigils enchanted onto the blade that seal a piece of the Eternal Flame within the sword. If someone unknown attempts to take the sword, an illusion of the first Angel is created to fight the would-be wielder. Only a person with access to the Eternal Flame can stand against him and if they survive, they will be able to wield the sword and unlock the fragment of the Eternal Flame which reunites with the other pieces, giving the wielder more access to it.

Manufacturing process

The sword was a marvel of Kentori smithing in its time due to the methods used to create it. Grandmaster Kentori smiths went to work, using pyromancy and enhancement magic to craft the metals into a blade. It took two weeks and dozens of attempts to shape the blade. Afterwards, it was superheated and quenched in the oils of the Tavar, creatures once native to the plains of the Cortavin Empire. The hilt, handle, and pommel were then attached to finish off the sword, completing the design. When Ignis later modified the sword, he used sigils to enchant the blade and seal a piece of the Eternal Flame within it along with an protection spell.

Significance

The sword is a symbol of the perceived Hero of Faterra, a legend who came to save the realm in its darkest hour. The 1^st was there to save Faterra from the Leviathans and the 2^nd was there to save them from Aslandail. However, others view it as a symbol of a villain. The 1^st Angel was known for his bloodlust and despite his attempts at diplomacy, had led countless wars to bring other kingdoms under the banner of the Phoenix Empire. The other has become a fearful and terrible nightmare in Aslandail and his sword is seen as the personification of his evil.
