Oloroa

High Sage Oloroa (a.k.a. Kingslayer)

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

When Oloroa was last seen (aged 256) he appeared unnaturally young with skin so pale it was almost white and translucent. He was slender and of medium height. He always moved slowly and with purpose. He has servants who tend to his needs and would rarely used physical strength even if only to open a door.

Special abilities

Oloroa is the greatest master of dark magic in the world. When he sacrificed King Varsel at the start of his coup he was empowered by not just the death of the King but the death of the Era of Irao Rule and the death of the peacetime it had overseen. Although he has made numerous sacrifices since that time, he is still empowered by the residual magic. His magic has manifested a number of powers. His is most known for his power to control the minds of other although there are also accounts of other powers in his arsenal including creating fire from nothing, calling storm clouds over a battlefield and blighting crops in his enemies fields. He is rumoured to have other powers although they are uncertain.

Apparel & Accessories

In public, Oloroa wears only his ceremonial robes. The robes of the sages convey their humility and commitment to scholarly endeavour. Oloroa's robes are therefore a simple burgundy. They are made from a light material and trimmed with passages from the Fundamental Charter of Vekirati Law to symbolise the universality of his reign. As High Sage he wears no crown. Instead he prefers a simple circlet of silver. While not as grand as the rulers of the neighbouring kingdoms, Oloroa's regalia is notable amongst the ruling sages of Nangkap who are usually forbidden from wearing any jewellery at all.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

Oloroa was born to a noble merchant family. Set to inherit a large fleet of ships, he was disowned by his family when he elected to train as a mage in the court of King Luria III. Becoming a mage in the royal court meant giving up his inheritance and the possibility of having children. It was expected that only second or third sons of minor nobility would take such a damning oath. His father never had another child and, although no official record of the transaction was kept, Oloroa went on to command his father's merchant ships as part of his personal retinue all the same.   The practice of magic had been forbidden in Vekirai since long before the building of the first tower in 530BU. Oloroa studied the dark arts in secret at night, in the Black Library which was kept in the deepest vault of the King's Tower.   By the age of 48, Oloroa had far surpassed his peers in all scholarly endeavours and had become one of the most trusted advisers of King Varsel. There are many who claim his influence over the King was only by the use of black magic, although this cannot be confirmed. He was hated by the other mages who refused consistently to elect him as Arch-Mage. On Oloroa's advice, the King decreed the foundation of a new order. The mages were to become the junior order to a new Royal Order of Great Sages. The mages duties were greatly reduced. Most significantly, the sages became the sole advisers to the King, with the demoted mages serving only in administrative roles.   Naturally, Oloroa convinced the King to select him as the first Arch-Sage of the order. It is rumoured that Oloroa, with the King's secret blessing, began teaching his elite sages the mysteries of the dark arts soon after the order's founding.   Over the following five years Oloroa planned a coup. He trained his sages in black magic and convinced a number of important military leaders to back him by coercion and enchantment.   Oloroa's coup hinged on a theory. Many of his dark rituals required a blood sacrifice. Oloroa supposed that by killing the King in ritual sacrifice he would kill not just a man but a dynasty, a government and the faith and loyalty of most of the King's subjects. By this act, Oloroa believed he could command a power more immense and destructive than had ever existed at the hands of a mortal man.   On the 9th of Imarat in the year 213BU, Oloroa enacted his coup. He entered the King's throne room at the appointed time early in the morning before the session of the court began. He was accompanied by around a dozen of his sages who had already dispatched the King's most loyal guards who stood outside the throne room.   Oloroa stabbed the King with a ceremonial dagger before the King had realised what was happening.   Empowered by his blood sacrifice, Oloroa took the city and the surrounding towns in a single decisive deployment of his troops. His magic was so powerful, he could command even his enemies to do his bidding and they would do so as if sleep walking. There are rumours that he could even raise the dead.   By Talrat, Oloroa controlled all the land that the King had held. He declared himself High Sage and ultimate ruler of Vekirai and all the world.   The Order of Mages was disbanded and the Order of Great Sages formed a new government. The titles of the entire nobility were stripped and Oloroa led his new government in setting up a meritocratic oligarchy in which power was given to the greatest scholars and magicians. Under this new order, the armies of Vekirai would go on to conquer all of Nangkap, making it the most expansive empire since the time of the Ancient Amalorians.   In his conquest, Oloroa occasionally fought alongside his troops lending them magical aid when defeat seemed certain and always reigning victorious.   After, Oloroa declared the year 0AU, he retired from public view. The Arch-Sage, selected by him, is now the de facto ruler of Nangkap. Officially Oloroa is still alive, however this would make him impossibly old.

Gender Identity

Vekirati culture features a strong sense of gender-norms. Oloroa is a man.

Sexuality

Heterosexuality is strictly mandated in Vekirati law and culture. Oloroa however is a sage and sages are forbidden from romantic or sexual relations. There is no evidence of Oloroa ever breaching this tenet. Oloroa is reviled by many in the provinces he conquered and rumours abound therefore about his sexuality.

Education

Oloroa trained himself in the ancient magical arts in the deep vaults of the Black Library under the King's Tower. No one had tried to decode the ancient texts since their language was lost at the fall of the ancient Amalorian Empire. It is unclear how Oloroa was able to rediscover the ancient language.
