Sky Whale

These large whales are the descendants of the whales which once lived in the nameless sea before the Turbulence happened and part of the sea dried up due to torrentious magic. The magic infused the animals and the area, and those which did not perish, adapted. Unlike their 'normal' cousins, these whales do not swim in the ocean anymore, but roam the sky. The Sky Whales inhabit the are of The Old Sea and are revered by the local inhabitants as bringers of the rainy season.    When the Whales die, they fall down from the sky. The predators and scavengers of the Desert usually pick the carcass quickly clean. Although, parts of the sky whale are valued as ingredients in magical potions and elixirs, their bones are used for crafting and their hide, when crafted into proper armor and clothing, is very durable even on the standards of the desert-dwellers.

Basic Information

Anatomy

These whales have adapted living high up in the air and they seem to swim through it like it was water. These giganteous but usually benign beings resemble their ordinary sea-dwelling cousins, but their coloration can vary greatly from muted ordinary grey to all the colors of rainbow and even beyond. Arcane patterns decorate their skin and their fins are large and almost oval shaped. Their tale is long and the tale fins look like huge sails.

Ecology and Habitats

The Sky Whales are endemic to the area of The Old Sea. It is probable they could not survive elsewhere due to their strong magical link to the area.

Dietary Needs and Habits

It is not completely known what the Whales eat: some tribes believe they feed on the souls who have passed in the harsh conditions of the desert, but supposedly they could feed on the smaller species of flying fishes or even get their nutrition straight from magical anomalies and wild magic areas which are common around the Old Sea.

Biological Cycle

"When the whales sing" is a saying among the tribes of The Old Sea which denotes the beginning of the rainy season, which always happens once every four years. That is the time when the whales gather together into larger flocks by using calls which can be heard miles and miles away. Supposedly they gather up to mate and meet their old flock members.
