Admir Berisha

(a.k.a. The Foolish Archmage)

What happened to Admir Berisha, the first arcmage of Larona after The Turbulence, is a cautionary tale of mortal hubris and overestimation of one's own talents.

Personal history

Admir was born as the youngest son a local duke and thus, received good education and excelled in arcane arts. He had excellent tutors and made great progress. He was a charming man and peoplpe tended to like him immediately, so together with his unusual aptitude he rose quickly in the hierarchy of the mages, although The Turbulence had decimated some magic users and caused the magic to fluctuate a lot. Perhaps because of that, Admir gained lot of power and some dissonant persons began to criticize the man, who was hogging all the magic to himself: it was generally known at the time that magic was awry and behaved errantly, but no one really knew what was behind the phenomenon, so some people were honestly afraid that the magic had become an important resource that could be stashed like some potatoes, which of course, was not really the case.

It is not clearly known what gave him the idea, but a couple of years after he had been chosen to be the archmage of Larona, he began to build a some kind of an apparatus, which could harvest magical powers. To house the odd magical machine, he built a tower, which rivalled even the highest spires of the castle of the archduke. But the tower seemed to never be ready; he was always adding to it, one floor after the next, one chamber after another.

The whole building seemed to defy the laws of nature, as everything was helt together with magic. Some survived eyewithness statements tell us that the tower was indeed higher than the castle, it's top higher than human eye could see. It casted a huge shadow over the city, even when the towers was built on a small hill which was located outside of the city walls. But this was not enough: people complained about the odd sounds and sighting of flickering lights like flowing candles coming from the building, so the arcmage Berisha was forced by the ruling elite to stop the construction work immediately. Instead, the archmage, completely engrossed with his work, his magnum opus, as he later stated in his memoirs, he decided to relocate the whole building.

Most people thought it was an impossible task to begin with: how would anyone relocate a whole huge tower, if not stone by stone? And even then it would take years, even centuries. But Archmage Admir had an idea and he crafted a great arcane spell, with which he managed to make the whole tower dissappear. And he disappeared together with it.

It is not well known what happened immediately after that, but when the diplomatic relations with The Domain of Zephyr warmed up a few centuries later, they could share some new information about the faith of the dissappeared archmage. The tradition passed down by the ancestors of the more elementally inclined people of the country told about a miracle appearance of a magical flying tower on the elemental plane. Perhaps the tower of thousand candles, as the Archmage's creation was dubbed by the citizens of Larona, still sails somewhere in the Elemental plane even today.
