Plant Beasts

Plant Beasts are mysterious and unique creatures that are native to the continent Vederan. Much like their name implies these odd creatures vaguely resemble normal beasts but instead of flesh and blood they are made of sap, roots, bark, and other plant-like material. Scholars and mages alike are baffled by the origin and the nature of Plant Beasts. Unlike ordinary beasts, Plant Beasts are full of abilities that make them far more deadly than they seem and should not be taken lightly. Given the danger of Vederan, no one truly knows how many different types of Plant Beasts there are. Perhaps the most interesting fact about Plant Beast is that when taken off the continent they become a little more lethargic and do not reproduce like normal. Known Plant Beasts are recorded here.   Vine Sloths One of the more docile Plant Beasts, vine sloths resemble a bed of moss that is roughly shaped like the torso and head of a sloth with four strong vines that make up its arms and legs. These creatures eat the bark of trees and use photosynthesis. It is believed that the Vine Sloths have superior photosynthesis capabilities because they can go weeks between meals as long as they have light. One should be careful when moving through forests as Vine Sloths do not like trespassers near their nests and have been known to use their arms and legs to hang and strangle unsuspecting travelers who have wandered to close.    Dandillion Much like the name implies dandillions are living plants that appear more like a lion. These creatures have 6 legs, a long tail that ends in bushy hairs much like a dandillions pollen, and a mane made of yellow flower petals. Most of the time their tails stand straight up and the end looks as puffy as possible but when hunting they are able to flatten the hairs on their tail to hide better. Despite its appearance, the dandillions tail is by far the most dangerous thing about them. The hairs are coated in a neurotoxin that immobilizes the creatures it comes into contact with. As with all the plant animals on Vederan, the dandilions “feed” off of sunlight as well as meat. Without sunlight, the creatures began to waste away as if they were malnourished and then eventually die.   Shroomback Pangolin These fungal covered creatures stand at roughly seven feet tall and can be seen lumbering through forests and jungles in search of decomposing remains to eat. While these creatures may seem cute or friendly when hungry they are not above killing things to create food. In combat, the Shroomback Pangolins or Shroombacks use their incredibly dense and sharp wooden claws to carve through metal and flesh alike. For defense, the Shroomback relies on the various mushrooms that it grows upon its back. When attacked the mushrooms release clouds of spores that rapidly proceed to grow on whatever they land on. More than one adventurer has suffocated due to mushrooms growing inside of their lungs. Despite the dangers, this creature poses, when fully fed it can be incredibly friendly and has even been known to follow adventurers around and warning them of danger. Scholars believe this is more because the Shroomback wants them to make more food for it and not because it likes people. Some explorers bring along remains of animals to feed Shroombacks and to use their incredible senses.   Canopy Jaguars These cat-like creatures rely on their natural camouflage to hide before dropping from above onto unsuspecting prey. Named after the canopy like appearance they have Canopy Jaguars are actually comprised of vine or root-like tendrils of wood-like material. They have thick bushy leaves that give them the appearance of being fuller-bodied and muscular as well as hiding their true body within. Canopy Jaguars only consume the liquids as a food source. Be it blood, water or sap these creatures are capable of draining an average-sized humanoid dry in as little as ten minutes. It is unknown how often these creatures can go between meals as they have thus far eluded capture and study. Of all the Plant Beasts on Vederan, few are as adept at hiding as the Canopy Jaguars      Floraphant Floraphants are one of the largest and most valuable of the Plant Beasts. Prized for their unique sap-like blood which is said to have almost magical like healing properties that can cure things from leprosy to infertility. These giant creatures live in herds of 10-18 and very rarely end up on their own. Floraphants may look kind and majestic but are in fact incredibly territorial and have been known to chase trespassers for miles to protect its territory. Herds of Floraphants claim large territories that they mark with tusk marks. If you happen to cross a trail of tusk marks on the ground you must be highly cautious or find a way around their lands. When two herds fight for territory the result can result in epic battles that cause the ground to tremble for up to a mile.    Tiger Lily   Beenaber   Orchid Mantis   Treehopper One of the more docile Plant Beasts on Vederan, the Treehoppers resemble giant grasshoppers comprised of wood and bark. Treehoppers will not attack unless startled, provoked or unless a person gets too close to its nest. The true strength of these creatures lies in their powerful legs and tough body. In combat, Treehoppers rely on kicking enemies with unrivaled strength or throwing itself forward to slam into its enemies. Those who have survived an attack by Treehoppers describe it as being slammed by a falling tree at high speed. It is highly recommended that you do not attempt to use these as a mount. When Treehoppers jump they have been known to accelerate up to 75 miles per hour in an instant. This could leave the unprepared rapidly flying through the air with no way to stop.    Scorpionweed   Hibisgriff One of the more terrifying Plant Beasts on Vederan, Hibisgriffs resemble hippogriffs made of green flesh like plant matter with wings that look like giant hibiscus petals and a "beak" hiding a long pollen tube that acts like its tongue. The key identifier that a Hibisgriff is near is the telltale smell of hibiscus that can be smelled from up to 500 ft way. Scholars have yet to understand how this creature sees despite not having eyes but most think it has some incredibly heightened sense of smell it relies on instead. Only the truly crazy attempt to train one of these creatures as mounts and even fewer actually manage it.    Leaf Ray   Pumpkey These small Plant Beasts resemble squat little primates with oversized pumpkins for heads and have displayed the ability to use rudimentary stone tools. Pumpkeys typically live in small communities and often keep their body buried so that predators cannot distinguish them from normal pumpkins that then surround their homes with. As a defense, the Pumpkeys are capable of spitting seeds as tough as iron at incredibly fast speeds. Getting into a fight with a community of Pumpkeys is one way to end up riddled with holes. It is possible to calm a lone Pumpkey down and prevent an attack by offering it water and pieces of reeds to chew on. When in groups, the Pumpkeys get increasingly more difficult and demanding to calm down.   Water Lurker When encountering a Water Lurker there is only one thing that you can do is to complete any last rites that your faith has before you are killed. Few creatures on Aloran are as ferocious as the Water Lurker. These monstrous creatures rest just below the surface of ponds, rivers, and lakes and wait for prey to get close enough. Water Lurkers are four-legged creatures with four tusks of incredibly tough wood, a tail that ends it what resembles a lily pad, and cattails and long grass growing on their back. The tusks of a Water Lurker are prized due to their incredible strength. They have been known to shatter metal weapons just by blocking them. The lily pads on the tails of the Water Lurkers is also a formidable weapon. Despite its appearance, the Lily pad is both very thin and incredibly sharp and has been the death of more than one adventurer who was more concerned with its tusks. Unlike most Plant Beasts the Water Lurkers are omnivores and also are capable of entering a hibernation period that relies only on photosynthesis. Those who are capable of capturing these creatures will find that they make great war beasts.     Lilyfish   Sedge Gators   Sugar Spiders These terrifying spiders get their name because their legs resemble fully grown sugarcane plants. Standing at roughly 12 ft tall they blend in with the surrounding foliage and wait for prey to walk underneath them. Those unfortunate few are then skewered by toxic quill-like hairs along the underside of the Sugar Spider. While it is assumed they hunt for food researchers have yet to actually confirm the diet of a Sugar Spider as encounters with such creatures usually end with the death of one side. The toxin on the quills is very effective on weapons and in foods. Uniquely the flesh of the Sugar Spiders is said to be incredibly sweet and is used in desserts and alcoholic beverages.
