The Elden Conclave (el-den-kon-kleyv)

The Elden Conclave are a collection of elders who serve as the peacekeepers and de facto leaders of Vanalen communities. Each community has their own set of council leaders comprised of the group's oldest members. Vanaren'silas culture value the input of their elders as they have experienced many historic events through the length of their illustriously long lives.

Structure

The Elden Conclave is structured as a conglomerate of multiple councils that guide the flock towards the values of Vanalen culture. Each community has their own set of village council elders that both guide, lead and provide judgment for disputes concerning the problems of the commonfolk. They answer to the noble that oversees the region of their community and communicates the needs of their flock to them so that they may better serve their duties as the principal leader.

Council elders that prove themselves through service and have lived a minimum of about 400 years qualify for a seat in the @Antediluvian. The Antediluvian is a group of elders who have served long enough to provide counsel to the Aese'vir as well as pass laws and enact policies towards the greater web of elder councils throughout Vanaren'silas.

Culture

The Elden Conclave is a strict and sometimes called archaic organization of Vanalen society. Members see the realm to be preserved and protected, disallowing those who would connive to abuse the resources given to them by way of greediness. The conclave believes itself to be the vanguard towards radicality and change, seeking to take a conservative stance on all political issues.

The primary prerogative of the conclave is preserve but also cultivate communities and allow them to prosper. Elders see their communities as their 'flock' and require to be tended to as they pass on generations of knowledge to the young elves that live within their villages. In turn, such elders are revered as community leaders and treated as parental figures in their respective communities. Most council elders keep close personal relationships towards those they oversee, making them less of a government authority and more of a mentor figure.

Public Agenda

The Elden Conclave's main goal is that of cultivation and preservation of both communities and the natural environment surrounding them. The main motivation for their actions dates back to the First Age of Mortals when Vanaren'silas was solely ruled by a council of elders and the nation was still a small tribe seeking to unite other elven tribes.

While the governing style has switched to a monarchy ruled by one leader, the respective communities, towns, small villages, hamlets and cities are all managed by a group of elders. It is because that elders are believed to have accrued more experience, and therefore, can decide accordingly based on years of understanding and tackling problems. The goal is to use such knowledge and experience to pass it down to the younger generation so that they may also take up the mantle of elder and lead future generations. The old traditions and practices that kept Vanalen society alive still is being done today.

Assets

The Elden Conclave, being a government organization of Vanaren'silas has a sizable treasury of universal currency (cp, sp, gp, etc.) as well as access to national resources such as basic needs like food, water, materials for construction, livestock and the like. They answer to a regional noble of the Then'vir, such nobility provides them with resources they require to cultivate their flock.

History

In the ancient times of Vanaren'silas, a council of elders used to be the primary authority and served the growing nation as its first government. Back in the days when the nation was forming, elven tribes scrambled to survive and tried to escape slavery under the Grand Order led by Prophet Zelderon. The tribe chieftains of these elven tribes sought to combat order's immense military power by settling their differences and uniting with each other to fight back against their oppressors. However, these tribal chieftains decided that they cannot set aside the pride of ruling. They believed they cannot assume fealty to another clan as it would be seen as a sign of weakness towards their clanmates.

As this was the case, they formed the first council of elders, a gerontocracy in where the 6 major elven clans were represented fairly and equally by their tribal chiefs. Decades would pass on and the council would find peace and organization in this government, however, it would not last as pride would consume the seemingly organized coalition and the collection of chieftains would find themselves unable to operate due to difference in opinion. Because of this, and in fear of other clans seceding, they held a vote for one chieftain to lead the united clans of Vanaren'silas and that chieftain became the first leading ruler of the united front in decades.

During this transition of power, the council of elders sought to make their presence a deciding factor still, taking away the notion of absolute authority from the current monarch. The remaining members formed the Antediluvian, a group committed to supporting the rule of the current monarch, as well as counselling them in affairs of state and warfare. In the centuries that passed and the numerous wars that Vanaren'silas has endured, the communities cultivated by their predecessors have grown vastly over the years. The Antediluvian saw it fit to assign a structure akin to their positions by allocating veteran leaders of their old clans to travel and assist newer, growing settlements. They then formed the Elden Conclave in this vein, a collection of experienced, veteran leaders spanning across many clans that formed Vanaren'silas to aid in the development of settlements whether they were at peace or at war.

To this day, Vanalen communities still assign an elder or a council of elders to lead their settlements, it is one of the old clan-like traditions that the elves of Vanaren'silas have preserved throughout the years. Their unwavering belief to the wisdom that comes with age and experience is highly respected within many communities. Although some reformist and liberal movements have sought to abolish such an archaic structure, it is quite evident that most Vanalens prefer to be led by someone with more experience than someone young and zealous.

"With age comes greater wisdom."
