Faceless Rage Condition in Alluria | World Anvil

Faceless Rage

On the boarder of Farrin and Benabry is an area known as the Blightlands, taking up over a hundred square kilometers, caused by an ancient prison for a forgotten god. This cursed land scoured all life from it, and any who entered eventually would succumb to the Faceless Rage just be being present. When the Gods of the Second Age ascended it was from here, cleansing the airborne curse, but those afflicted could still pass it should they make contact with another.   As the name suggests, afflicted individuals are slowly overtaken by aggression and anger as their facial features begin to sweat and swell. As the incubation period elapses the swollen face seals, becoming smooth and featureless, at which point the mind of the afflicted will be lost to fury. The infected seem to retain a knowledge of their former skills and abilities, making highly trained individuals or dangerous creatures even greater a threat. The afflicted are highly resistant to magic, making restraining or healing them extremely difficult. Any who are attacked by infected and make skin contact have a high chance to get infected, making spread very quick and dangerous. Though they have lost all facial features and connected senses, they appear to have some form of blind-sense, knowing creatures are near in any direction no matter how stealthy they are.   The only reason this hasn't spread across the globe is due to the afflicted having some kind of draw to the Blightlands; even those that have been captured and moved elsewhere have attempted to escape and return to the Blightlands, as have any they infected along the way. These experiments have lead to the realisation that Faceless Rage can infect any creature or animal without issue.

Symptoms

Patents begin with mild irritation and are easily disgruntled, but appear otherwise unaffected. After about three hours the patient will start begin to show symptoms of a fever or whatever biological equivalent they may have, and over the next three hours their face will being to swell up, during this time becoming more and more agitated and aggressive. Generally by hour six the patient will have a face so swollen that features are obscured, and any protrusions such as noses or snouts will generally begin to recede back into the face. Within eight hours the swelling will begin to meld together and seal the face over, and anger levels are no longer controllable. At this point the Faceless Rage is considered complete of its incubation and the patient is infectious.   Utilising an antimagic circle appears to help extend the incubation period greatly, changing hours to days.

Treatment

There has only been a handful of cases of countering Faceless Rage before its incubation has finished, due to the aggressive nature of patients and growing resistance to magic it makes administering treatments quite a challenge. The single cure was made from a mix that included Nullbud; the mixture made at the time saved three people before it was used up. No other cure has been found.
