The party is ambushed by Caen and commits to putting his soul to rest.

After resting and healing up at the village, the group headed to Thistlefort. Ramud Gravedigger and Jormez Kerrisk departing, Jormez electing to purchase a new wagon, and Ramud returning to The Violet Fire Tower. The group elected to spend several days shopping and relaxing while Christie mad several scrolls, Mongoose spent her days preaching the word of Zoleah to those who would hear it in the town.
When they finally went to leave the town, they found all the horses in the stable at the inn had been slaughtered, by a monster with claws, but the monster had not eaten the horses. They attempted to acquire new horses from the stable in town, but they were unable to as Mongoose had offended him with her preaching, but they were able to determine that the Stablemaster's horses were fine.
The group traveled back to The Spire, where they met Jormez, who was building a shrine in the back of his new wagon, which did have a horse. He warned them that he had heard strange noises coming from The Spire but wasn't going back in there any time soon. The group sent Jimmy to scout ahead, but as the first floor was still covered in darkness, this helped little. When they all joined him, they were attacked again by the spirit of Caen Borland. After they destroyed the spirit, they consulted with Jormez, who advised them it was probably a bad idea to bury people outside The Spire and that, given their past experiences, his spirit was likely bonded to his guitar, and if they could find that guitar, he would do what he can to help.
The party rested and dined with Jormez outside The Spire.
The next day, they headed back into The Spire, intent on locating the guitar. They located the pit they had thrown his guitar into, as well as few moon spiders. After defeating them, Jimmy attempted to disable the trap to get into the pit, but fell into the pit and landed on the guitar, causing him to become possesed by Caen. The pit began to fill with the sounds of the guitar, and suddenly the possesed Jimmy was teleported to behind Mongoose, and attempted to stab her to death.
The possessed Jimmy did battle with the group, as did the undead body of Caen. They were better prepared for him now and did better at resisted his attempts to manipulate their minds, and Guiliman was able to hack and slice Caen to pieces, but this did not break the enchantment on Jimmy, who touched The Spire and spoke aloud the ancient words for level 14, and traveled there. The group bravely followed after him.
They found themselves in a large chamber, the center of which was The Spire, but with an elaborate throne cut into it, and sitting upon the throne was the lich Noul'zadan. In the room there were more elaborate clockworks, and Jimmy, kneeling in front of the lich, radiating necromatic energy. Noul'zadan laughed and mocked them, and the group tried to battle against him, resisting his enchantment magic but doing little damage. Jimmy tried to drag Christie away, the lich seeming most interested in her. The group tried to grab Jimmy and drag him back into The Spire and travel to a safer level, but Jimmy fought them. Guiliman tried to grapple the lich to stop his spells, and Mongoose tried to ward Jimmy against the lich's magic, but he did not seem to be able to throw off the spell. Christie said that the cause was lost, and she, Hans, and Guilimaan, retreated back to the 1st level. Mongoose stayed, because of her religious convictions, and finally Jimmy was able to throw off the spell, and they grabbed the guitar and fled, regrouping with the others and fleeing The Spire.
Jormez lead them in a ritual and they were able to exercise Caen's spirit from the guitar, and Caen apologized for all the trouble he had caused, but advised that he could not be at peace until the Lich was defeated, and he rebound himself to this world, traveling into one of Jimmy's daggers, transforming it into a sentient weapon. Caen lamented that he no longer had a body, but that he might be able to have one again if they killed the lich. The group warned Caen that he may want to keep quiet around other people.
