Somnum Hills

Description:

Graveyard-filled hills, right up against the border of the Dead Lands / Northern Mesica, covered in an unearthly mist and a cold that permeates to the bone. These hills are full of Scourgers of all creatures, as well as Core Spirits and corpses abound. Tombstones ranging from small stones with poorly etched-in righting, to full on crypts that extend a floor or two into the ground, with impressive entrances up on the surface. The grass and plants here are a withered brown, with animals being scarce and looking quite unhealthy. The whole is desolate, but lively at the worst possible times, with Core Spirits and Scourgers crowding in hordes.

History:

These hills never gained an official start date, merely growing from many sentients burying their dead during the Earth Reforming Calamity as most of their people died from radation and decay, leaving only the strong. So many perished that the Somnum Hills quickly became covered in gravestones. Many of those already dead from the weapons used were also ended up buried here, whether to rid the mass of corpses across lands, or out of respect.

Tainted:

Due to the proximity of the Somnum Hills to the Dead Lands / Northern Mesica (the location of the largest Dunkelheit land), the Somnum hills are afflicted with an uneasiness that hangs over it constantly. This has a negative Core Spirits there, with many of them of being dangerous as a result. Not to mention, because of this uneasiness and the creatures that reside there, the land is surrounded in myths, rumors, and legends, causing many people to fear it and avoid it, while others will fantasize it in when they have lost hope, and will travel out to the hills to join the rest of the dead.

Black River:

A river runs through the Somnum hills, creating a shallow canyon as it flows all the way from the Montiwell Mountains all the way to the Heart Lakes at the The Atlantis. Corpse might often be carried along this river, or the dangerous viruses that are often found on rotting corpses. The Core Spirits love this river, and will often use it to cause even more trouble to travelers, or use it to be dramatic in their dead-state. It also serves as an additional barrier to those trying to enter the Dead Lands / Northern Mesica.
