Mimics Species in Alenya’s Adventures | World Anvil

Mimics

Mimics are spiritual creatures that have no physical form of their own, but have discovered that they can embody a variety of inanimate objects. It has been (and often still is) the mistaken belief of many that mimics are shapeshifters, and while there might be a vague element of truth in this, it is not wholly accurate. It doesn't happen often, but they can shift from one object to another if they so wish, but these objects already exist and simply become "possessed" by the mimic. There is no malicious intent in these possessions, it is simply the manner in which they choose to live. Unfortunately, there are those who view mimics as little other than a threat - a view that has only been supported through the consequences of their own actions.

Mischievous Mimics

One of the most common objects mimics choose are exactly that, common. Everyday items enable them to cause mischief where possible. This can be something as simple as moving unexpectedly, to stealing or relocating small trinkets and objects. Once a mimic has been discovered, these items can be recovered, at least temporarily before the mimic begins to slowly steal them once again if they stay in the same location. Some mimics, once discovered, will move on to other places to play their same tricks on different people. This can be dangerous for them, as they can't always be sure how the person they tease will react to their presence.   Mimics can come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes, mostly depending on what they select to inhabit. One scholar who has been fascinated with these creatures has observed that the longer a mimic is bonded to an object, the more likely they are to develop additional features, whether by their own potential arcane power, or simply by fusing together more than one objects.

Mimic Hunters

These Hunters first began with a misguided, yet innocent ideal - to "free the spirits" of the mimics. It was believed that the spirits had somehow gotten themselves stuck in a variety of objects, and were therefore tied to this mortal realm and could not return to their spiritual one. However, the spirits have chosen to stay here and to reside in these objects, to the point where any effort to "free" them was instead met with resistance of an unfortunately violent nature. Those who had considered themselves protectors, became hunters, and they spread the word amongst adventurers that mimics are "dangerous creatures". With no way to communicate, mimics could not defend themselves with words, so when attacked, they could do nothing more than fight back.

Loyal Companions

It is possible to gain the trust and friendship of mimics, if you treat them right (and give them treats). As these spiritual beings do not seem to age - or age at a much slower rate than anyone has been able to track so far - it is also possible to have mimics become a form of ancestral heirloom. There is a rumour that one such exists as a journal which contains the history and secrets of the family, and is impossible to open or read unless a member of that family. Heirloom mimics will show a strong loyalty to members of their family, and can be trained as protectors. Someone has also claimed to have visited a house where everything seemed to be alive, even the house itself. This has given rise to the idea that mimics could create their own living town, an idea that is horrifying to some. Little evidence has been found to support this idea so far, but mimics are rather talented at hiding so who knows, perhaps there is a mimic city out there somewhere.

I absolutly love this article ! It is so rare and refreshing to find stuff about goofy cute mimics rather than dunjeon mobs. Mimic city sounds so great and the service of mimic tied to a family sounds so good. I love they have a place so large and nuanced, and are not just hunted or trained. It was fun to read.

Thank you so much! It was inspired by a prompt in the game Apothecaria (which this world is build around) where you get chance to adopt a mimic. Loved the concept, so decided to expand on it! Glad you liked it so much!
