Silver Piece

the Sterling

The Silver piece, more commonly known as a 'sterling', is the standard for all coinage on Ethae, if not the world. While the term 'sterling' is the spoken slang used across the continent, when used in monetary records it is almost universal written as 'silver piece', or shortened to sp for convenance.

Most stable countries mint silver coins with small amounts of other metals for various reason. The Nopeli and their sterling silver, which is mostly pure silver with a small mix of copper (92.5 to 7.5 ratio), have become the standard for silver coin value. Nopeli smiths have been masters of creating the alloy since at least the Lakorthian Age. With their city of New Open being the heart of northern trade for centuries, their sterling coins have spread far and wide, making the Nopum sterlings are the most common coin found across all of Aldern. So much so that silver pieces in the modern day, no matter who minted them, or the alloy used, are universally called 'sterlings' throughout Ethae.

While it varies based on occupation and location, most unskilled commoner laborers earn about forty sterlings (40sp) per year on average. This amounts to a little over one Copper Piece (1cp) per day. This is doubled or tripled for skilled labor, such as masons or carpenters. Nobility can average anywhere from ten to sixty thousand sterlings (10,000sp-60,000sp) per year depending on titles and landholdings. Universities cost an average of one hundred seventy sterlings (170sp) per year.
