Aterleg Myth in Aldern | World Anvil

Aterleg (AT er lag)

Grandfather Tree

The natives of Jerain know Grandfather Tree as 'Atarlag', in Novyum 'Atarleg', and in Anbar 'Aterlag'. The Jenuwan Order use the spelling 'Aterleg'. Whichever spelling, all are the same tree. The first tree of creation. Every corner of Ethae has a legend of Aterleg. The universally accepted myth is the tree was planted on Aldern in the land of Garden by Alu sometime before the estimated date of 5000 pre-sc. The Jenuwan claim in their records this was two hundred years before He made mankind.

It is said Grandfather Tree reached was high, and the tree drank its water from the clouds rather than water from the ground. the myth claim it’s roots touched every corner of the Aldern. Aterleg's truck base was so wide it would take many hours to circle around it, and its branches extended so far that it would take half a day to see sky if one walked out from its trunk. Among the tree’s branches drifted orbs of yellowish-orange spheres that had a soft warm glow. These were concentrated orbs of Magic the result of Aterlag’s biology. As a normal tree would take in carbon dioxide and release oxygen through photosynthesis, Aterleg drew energy from the world below and energy from the sun above and released its own energy that is the source of all Daanan in Aldern.
