Arc Stones

Kianon Towers

These massive stones are towering rock formations that have been a source of frustration, mystery, and contradiction for scholar worldwide throughout the ages. They stand as sites of powerful Magic, yet the stone itself is resistant to magical energy. The arc stone can be made up of one or more natural mineral and elements, yet the stone is much denser than its natural counterpart. They do not appear to have been formed of nature, but thrust through the very crust of the world, jutting out like a spike from below. Water collected in reservoirs carved into the stone remains pure, even after centuries of stagnant storage. Soil that builds up atop the stone remains nutrient rich longer, and plant growth can grow in harsher climates. That said, edible plant life struggles to grow and needs to be maintained, and the pure waters will lose that quality should they be taken away from the arc.

Arc stones can be found anywhere on Aldern, with no rhythm or reason for their locations. Every continent has at least one, the major continents have countless, with many believing all still have not been found. Though it is unknown if any exist deep below the oceans, most scholars conclude there must be many on the ocean floor.

Arc stones appear as natural rock formations, jutting out of the world. Their shape is random and natural, some as wide as 100 yards, others, though rare, can be up to a quarter mile long. Outside of their harder than natural rock, and bazaar magical properties, they are hard to distinguish from another similar formations throughout the world, especially in mountain ranges.

During the Lakorthian Age many of the arc stones in Novyum were destroyed, carved up and used as building stone for Lakorth itself. The cut stones from the arcs retain their density and magic resistant nature, making them ideal for defensive fortifications. These stones are extremely resistant to natural and magical damage. An advantage for the great city and its inhabitants, but a loss for historians and scholars as there are very few arcs remaining in Ethae to study. The method of carving bricks from these stones are lost to history, however, as have most arc stones.

As stated, most arc stone's locations have been relegated to tomes and forgotten by the masses. For those that study these stones they are considered more of a legend from ages past, than historical facts. The few that remain and are known often have ruins or villages and castles on them.
