The Revenants

The Revenants

The Revenants are an infamous group of mercanries operating in the shadows of Alboric, their ranks filled with criminals, deserters, and wielders of dark magic. Their true purpose remains an enigma, shrouded in whispers and speculation. Some claim they serve The Red Hands, Alboric’s most feared criminal syndicate, while others insist they are bound by a pact to an ancient Demon, carrying out its will in exchange for forbidden power. A few believe they are more than mere mercenaries—operatives of an invisible organization, working in the shadows to manipulate the affairs of Alboric’s nations for their own unknown ends.   What is certain is their ruthlessness. Where The Revenants appear, bodies are left behind, and truths best left buried are uncovered. Their actions have drawn the ire of the Vydern Empire and the Uisprix Dynasty, both of which have placed exorbitant bounties on their heads. The Port City of Syrena in Ardune Sai has banned them outright, and the dreaded Devout Inquisition hunts them with relentless zeal, interrogating anyone who may hold the faintest knowledge of their movements.   Few who encounter The Revenants dare to speak of it, for even those who survive know that prying into their affairs invites only ruin. Most choose to turn a blind eye, fearful that acknowledging their existence will draw their wrath.

A Secret Origin

In A400, as Elara Wolfsong laid the foundations of the Guild of Heroes, she secretly began work on a far more covert project—one known only to her. She understood that the Guild, to maintain public favor, would need to uphold a righteous image. Yet, beneath the surface, she knew there would always be work that required a darker touch—tasks that could never be acknowledged, let alone sanctioned by the Guild itself. Determined to create a group that could operate in the shadows, Elara compiled a list of individuals suited for such work—mercenaries, criminals, and magic users who would do what the Guild could not. But she needed a leader, someone capable of forging these outcasts into a functional force. She turned to Vyris Crow, an old comrade from her days with the Valiant Vagrants, hoping he would take command of the rogue operation.   Vyris, however, was already burdened with the leadership of the Watchers of the Wastes and could not accept. Instead, he sent one of his most trusted lieutenants, Marek Raven, a man whose loyalty and cunning were beyond question. Under the pretense of joining the Guild of Heroes, Raven became one of its first inductees, all while carrying out a far different mission: the creation of The Revenants. Raven’s first recruit was his longtime friend and deadly confidant, Shadowblade. Together, over the next three years, they meticulously built the Revenant Mercenary Company, operating in secrecy under the guise of official Guild assignments. Missions deemed too delicate or dishonorable for the Guild’s public face were quietly funneled to their growing network of operatives.   By A403, the foundation was complete. With the Revenants fully formed, Shadowblade was officially assigned as their leader, while Marek Raven withdrew from the shadows and returned to his visible role within the Guild of Heroes—his part in their creation buried beneath layers of secrecy.

A Public Display

In A406, The Revenants were forced into the public eye after their intervention in the public execution of Leon Roth, a former Imperial Executioner turned traitor. Roth had uncovered a dark secret hidden by the Church of the Devout, along with the unsettling truths behind the assassination of Leotholden the Chosen—a revelation that posed a grave threat to both the Church's power and the Empire's authority. Desperate to silence him, the Church sentenced him to death.   However, the Revenants had other plans. In a daring and violent rescue, the group struck swiftly, leaving eight Imperial soldiers dead and a Devout Inquisitor among the casualties. The chaotic confrontation, though brief, marked a turning point for The Revenants, who had now become more than a myth.   The aftermath of the event sent ripples through Alboric, with rumors and speculation swirling in its wake. The secretive group, once only whispered about in dark corners, was now known to all. The Revenants had earned a reputation of ruthless efficiency and deadly purpose, and their actions that day would go on to cement their infamy across the continent.
