Iliac Aalto Serous

Iliac Aalto Serous, I

Orator, philosopher, poet, historian, and weapons conservator Iliac Aalto Serous was the eldest of the four monochorionic-diamniotic twins born to noted Pèlerine Quelveneck Quelevent Serous and Lemesre Silouane Serous on the 13th of Sanassis, 18 EG/LL. Like his siblings, he was a born Pèlerine: known as Iliac An Changeant Taoidí, he was the Pèlerine of explorers, discovery, and changing tides. He was a noted scholar of the Memoriam Inanimatam and The Reminiscentia, having undergone several expeditions to Feall Síoraí/its surrounding regions and his sister Idonia's deep-sea kingdom of Pelagia, providing the basis for Riomh Volcanogenic Theory not the least among his accomplishments.

Artifacts

The Book of the Tides is the last research journal used by Iliac Serous prior and up to the time of his Loss, recovered and returned to his promise following a routine investigation into the matter. The Tidebook is said to contain notes related to several of Serous' unfinished projects, including a purported follow-up to The Art of Gravitational Collapse. This cannot be confirmed, as it is believed to be kept close to the heart of his widow at all times.

History

During his early years as a war historian for the Memoriam Inanimatam with a particular focus in weaponry and conservation, Iliac took a keen interest in the ancient art of Gravitational Collapse as practiced by the members of House Fuil na Réaltaí - in 39 EG/LL the organization arranged for Iliac to meet with the leading expert in the form, a then-16 year old Galexia. He spent more than a month at The Mantle undergoing intensive training in the art form (which supplied the material for his 42 EG/LL text "The Art of Gravitational Collapse").

Iliac and Vigore did not meet again until 41 EG/LL, when Saxon Seath first began to etch his name in Anima's history books by supplying the Mortelle populations of Albion and beyond, thus reigniting the Anima-Mortelle Wars after approximately 28 years of armistice. Iliac, having spent the last 2 years training in every martial art he could reasonably access and now able to defend himself as well as any Uxor Morte, joined the bivouac encampment in his new capacity as officially ranked Memoria/m and freshly-minted war correspondent and was surprised but delighted to find his teacher from years earlier encamped a few tents over.

Over the next century or so of Saxon-fueled conflicts Iliac and Vigore, as she preferred to be called, grew increasingly close and developed a deep friendship based in respect for one another. With her help Iliac went so far as to adapt techniques from gravitational collapse for those of Serousian/Sauserousian ancestry, crafting such new techniques as the Iliac Crest and the Stellar Riptide and replacing the meteor hammer with a salted net and hook. Conversely, he sat as a rapt audience for Vigore's experimentations with combat, dance, and movement time and again. Some time in 142 EG/LL, after thousands of nights keeping watch beside low campfires, Iliac quietly and resolutely declared his love for the undying star while annotating his battle notes for the day. By 145 EG/LL they were Promised to one another, though with their collective lifespan and free-spirited nature as a couple they saw no reason to rush toward the ceremony of a Bloodfasting.

They would never see their bloodfasting ceremony, as on 28 Cathasach, 1039 LL during the Battle of Eventide Iliac was struck by a bolt of powerful magic whilst taking notes on the battle from a hilltop and disintegrated on the spot, leaving no possibility that he might return in another Inmortui form. Only his journal remained, bioluminescent ink still wet. It and all of his other effects were given to Vigore following his honoring by the Memoriam Inanimatam, and she has kept herself busy in the 9,481 years since his Loss.

Iliac An Changeant Taoidí

Fluactat Nec Mergitur (Canticle for Changing Tides)

lying prone on the shore at high tide, a body is a kind of castle in the sand
steady as the earth itself until a bigger predator arrives to cut it down to size
a body, too is constantly waiting
for the smash,
the reelback,
the taste of blood,
the pillars raised and erased,
the supercontinent of organs fractured,
fractal, the pieces of her drifting away from themselves
redefine me
as many times
as it takes.

a body is a kind of sea at storm:
mostly water,
Idonia Medora in her final form,
a heaping helping of violence; a perfect recipe
for disaster

a body, too, knows the smell of ozone
lingering in a low cloud
like expensive perfume
vast,
without fathom,
unknowable, a tempest wrapped in ill-fitting skin
wash me away
and while you’re at it
take my sins with you

a soul is a kind of ship set sail
stuck in the doldrums
on an ocean of polished glass
no wind in any direction, lacking potable water
and ill-prepared
for the journey

a soul, too, can be committed to the deep
lured by sirens with voices like blue sky and full sails
dashed to pieces on the rocks ahead
left to a watery grave
left to drowned gods and sunken heroes
left to lost cities in the deep dark

call for me
whistle into the wind
if you want to know how low you can sink
