Forest Calcatrix
The forest calcatrix is a terror bird living on and around the northmost part of Arthros. It is a highly hierarchical species, with a ruling class of more humanoid creatures with advanced intelligence. The lower classes have the average intelligence of a terror bird and are quite violent without training.
They have a thick, rough skin covered in large, wide feathers, which are usually either yellow, light grey or dark purple. They are experienced large game hunters and carnivores. They will eat humans but due to wanting to stay on good terms, try to avoid doing so.
They live in the mountaineous forests of the Spynes mountain region, but have been found as south as Pestilentia visiting neighbouring bird clans. They're nocturnal and rely on their sight and hearing to get around. They have thin, narrow eyes and often the more humanoid ones have small horns. Their heads are average for their bodies, and the lower classes can be reared like oxen or horses for driving/riding. Very few tribes however, are on good enough terms with the forest Calcatrix aside from the Arakhne at times. Calcatrix tribes in Aranea are often hired as mercenaries for the in-fighting between Arakhne tribes. They make large shrieking sounds to communicate, though the upper classes have developed a human language whose dialect varies regionally to the point other clans sometimes have trouble understanding each other. The forest Calcatrix are fairly violent, but they're not territorial at all. They mate once or twice a year and they mate with one or two partners throughout life. The more humanoid ones, who seemed to have evolved from ancient experiments or genetic engineering, are capabale of reproducing with other species, including some genetically engineered humans.
