Session 4: Sanctuary Report

General Summary

The Temple

The party entered the stone building and discovered a temple to Chauntea (Goddess of Agriculture). Inside, they found many cowering villagers trying to shelter from the raid, but as they entered, a loud slamming sound heralded something very large and heavy hitting the front doors.   The party attempted to persuade them to leave, while Uthal charged up to the front doors to shore them up more thoroughly. Jawn was eventually able to get some sense into them, and he was aided by the priest (Eadyan Falconmoon). Between them and Eadyan, they got the frightened villagers out of the building in short order to the sound of the battering on the front door while Uthal held it together as best he could.   Jawn and Egan led the way, leading the villagers across the stream towards the buildings that weren't on fire yet, with Nutmeg and Eadyan bringing up the rear. Uthal planted more in the way of the other doors before hurrying out after them.   Nutmeg realized that the villagers were leaving a fairly obvious trail (even at night) and cautioned the rest of the party, lest they lead the enemy right to their secret tunnel. After some deliberation, they decided to head back to the stream early (keeping the houses between them and the temple to hide them from the raiders), and Jawn offered to use Prestidigitation to hide their footprints once they reached the treeline.   They had the villagers line up in single file to minimize the trail they'd erase, and got them into the stream and up towards the tunnel. Jawn was able to clean up all traces of their passage before the raiders could find them, and they snuck into the keep without incident.

Rest and Recuperation

The party returns to the hospital wing for healing and to top off on healing potions. They take a short rest until about 2am, after which they are approached by Governor Nighthill, who thanks them for their hard work. He then mentions his concern about why the raiders have attacked them in the first place; they don't have anything of value that a dragon would want. After some hypothesizing, the party offers to capture a raider for interrogation.

Capturing a Prisoner

They sneak back out of the keep and along the riverbank in search of candidates. Flying low overhead is the dragon, whose shadow passes close - but the dragon doesn't attack them.   There's a brief pause at the cordon where a raider glances over at them, but apparently mistakes them for other raiders and ignores them. They slip past and find a group raiding houses nearby. When Egan goes to position himself, though, they realize that there are more behind them - ones that Egan walked right into the vision range of (though they also didn't notice him).   When Egan points this group out to his teammates, Uthal charges off around the corner to attack, catching the raiders by surprise. They're able to quickly dispatch the raiders, and knock out one wearing robes in the hopes that he's more important/knows more.   They sneak back through the stream to avoid being spotted, and return to the keep. There, Governor Nighthill thanks them yet again, and invites them to the interrogation (since they've been doing most of the work). He attempts to question the prisoner, but the prisoner is resistant, and doesn't talk (even under threat from both Egan and Uthal) until Jawn finally persuades him to loosen his tongue.

A Long Rest at Last!

At this point, there's little else they can do but ride out the rest of the raid. Nighthill is relieved that the raiders are after treasure rather than people. It won't be easy recovering from a financial blow like this, but far better that than losing lives. More lives.

Rewards Granted

Interrogation Intel

  • The raiders are here looking for treasure. Any treasure will do, apparently: coin and silver (including silverware) and anything else of value.
  • The treasure is for the "great hoard," which in turn is for the "Queen of the Dragons," who will reign over the world.
  • The leaders of the raid are Mondath and Cyanwrath. Cyanwrath is not the name of the dragon.
  • The Wyrmspeakers are special. "Blessed" is the term the cultist used before he shut up about them.

Missions/Quests Completed

The party rescued the villagers trapped in the temple of Chauntea. They also captured a prisoner for Nighthill to interrogate.

Character(s) interacted with

Eadyan Falconmoon, priest of Chauntea; Governor Nighthill; Escobert, Keeper of the Keys; a cultist prisoner.
