Session 3: Governor Nighthill Report

General Summary

The party arrived in Greenest Keep, where their wounds were treated, and they took a short rest. After this, they were approached by a guard, who summoned them to meet with Governor Nighthill, the governor of Greenest. He thanked them for rescuing the Swifts and bringing them to safety, and asked if they would be willing to assist them further.   The bandits (thank the gods) are not attacking the keep, and Nighthill is pretty sure they aren't interested in it at this point. However, they've blocked off access to the keep, and there are still villagers out there who weren't able to make it to the keep before them. Nighthill asked the party if they would be willing to help get villagers to safety, and when they agreed, he sent them to Escobert, the Keeper of the Keys, in the cellar.   Escobert, it turns out, is a dwarf (and is unfamiliar with the Escargot clan... if there is one... and most certainly isn't related to them). He took the adventurers to the "old tunnel," something resembling a sewer grate leading out from the keep to the base of the hill near the river. The party cleared the boxes and unlocked the first grate. Inside, they found a swarm of rats, which they drove off. The outer grate was rusted, and they chose to bash it open.   Unfortunately, a group of raiders happened to be passing by at the time, and set up an ambush for the party. They fought viciously, but the two kobolds across the river, realizing they were no match for the adventurers, decided to take off... possibly to gather reinforcements, warn the others, or tell them about the secret entrance to the keep. Fortunately, Egan with his monk swiftness, was able to overtake the kobolds and knock them out.   The party had successfully cleared the tunnel, but after some discussion, decided to see if they could escort more villagers back before reporting their success. They tried a few of the houses nearby (which were not on fire, like the ones across the river), but no one was home. Most still had food on the table, and a couple had left lanterns lit (which Uthal put out courteously/to avoid fire hazards).   The party continued on until they spotted a temple on the other side of the river. The temple appeared to be surrounded by smoke, although the stone itself was not on fire. The party snuck over to investigate, and saw a large group of kobolds and drakes parading around the temple, while a small group at the back door seemed to be trying to burn the back door down (so far, no luck - the oak was particularly solid). The party surmised that a larger group was probably at the front door, and decided to try ambushing the back door group (once the parade had gone). They successfully ambushed and defeated the back door group, and unlocked the back door.

Missions/Quests Completed

The party successfully opened the Old Tunnel without giving away its location, thus giving them a way in and out of the keep without fighting through a horde of raiders.
