FTH Complex Settlement in Ained | World Anvil

FTH Complex

The FTH Complex, short for Faster Than Human, was a settlement built by Omegatech to show off their automation excellency. Robots excavated the complex, built the structures and now work almost without a pause, except for maintenance, in the mines around. The Complex extracted resources from the Surface and exported them with unbelievable speed, including water, oxygen and nitrogen.   In the year 13012 a robot insurgence caused the FTH Complex Accident, which ended with the annihilation of the habitat.

Demographics

About 250000 people lived in the habitat before the accident. Most of them were engineers involved in robot maintenance, security guards supervising the settlement with AI-aided systems, administrative personnel or teachers.   Machines, instead, were about one million, including workers, maintenance drones, civil service robots and autonomous soldiers. Omegatech never disclosed the proportion between them, but people were able to guess some ranges after the accidents. In particular, it was clear that soldiers could not repel the insurgent robots and, since Omegatech stated soldiers were under control, it is natural to conclude that the insurgents greatly outnumbered them. It is currently believed military machines were somewhere between 50 thousand to 150 thousand.

History

Around the year 12950, Omegatech decided to construct a new habitat. They had already moved their headquarters to a habitat they were the sole owners of but wanted to build a new one to show off their technological advancements. In particular, the complex would have been the leading settlement for a new social structure based on engineers supervising machines doing most of the work, with advanced AI control grids to help them localising possible problems. The fully automated habitat blueprint was ready before the UNA had given their approval for the requested location.   In year 12987, the habitat was finally ready, and the inauguration took place. Omegatech sympathisers relocated to the new habitat, where houses could be rented for a more affordable price compared to ordinary habitats. The automated model revealed to be more productive than the old semi-automated model, especially since maintenance drones were more efficient, allowing for less downtime in production. Until, one fated day of October 13012, a fault in the control grid caused the infamous FTH Complex Accident.   The automated workers inexplicably insurged against the city, and the defences could not repel the rebellion. The city was evacuated, and an in-site nuclear detonation was triggered to wipe out the habitat and the machines. The accident marked the end of the first automated complex and a temporary pause in AI research, which was fundamental to Omegatech's new social frontiers. Even though the corporation has since resumed research, many people now distrust their vision of a world made of automated workers and AI-controlled settlements.   Rumour has it, Omegatech is currently working on a project to rebuild FTH.
