Quillamar, The Quiet Spine

In the hush between heartbeats, where stillness shields the soul, walks Quillamar, the Animal Lord of Hedgehogs. Unlike many of the more boisterous or regal lords of beastkind, Quillamar is a creature of contemplation, wisdom, and quiet strength. They are the eternal watcher at the forest's edge, cloaked in dusk and silence, their presence felt in the safety of small places and the resilience of gentle things. When storms howl and predators roam, it is Quillamar who curls into calm, enduring until the danger passes.

Quillamar’s form is striking yet humble—an enormous, majestic hedgehog with dark, earthy spines tipped in silver and eyes like wells of starlit ink. Moss and lichen grow along their back, and small animals often nest beneath their quills, protected by their presence. When they speak, it is softly, yet their words carry a weight that stills even the most fervent rage. Quillamar teaches that there is power in patience, and dignity in defense rather than domination.

From their hidden burrow-temple deep within the Glenshade Hollows, Quillamar created two gentle species to embody their values: the Erina and the Hedge.

The Erina are sturdy, bipedal hedgehog-folk—thoughtful, peaceful, and surprisingly formidable when cornered. They live in close-knit communities beneath forest canopies, carving homes from roots and stone, storing wisdom in carved runes and shared stories. Known for their unmatched herbalism and defensive martial styles, Erina monks and shamans are often seen as living echoes of Quillamar’s teachings.

The Hedge, by contrast, are smaller, quadrupedal, and more reclusive—a true Beastfolk in the most primal sense. Gifted with extraordinary senses and magical affinity for warding and healing, they serve as forest guardians, scouts, and natural seers. Some believe the Hedge can curl into themselves so tightly that they vanish between worlds, traveling through the folds of root and shadow to avoid threats.

Quillamar’s followers—often druids, rangers, and contemplative clerics—rarely seek glory. Instead, they work behind the scenes, shielding the vulnerable, preserving sacred groves, and offering quiet counsel to those willing to listen. They teach that strength is not in violence but in the will to protect, to endure, and to remain kind in a world that often forgets gentleness.

While few temples to Quillamar exist, their sigil—a curled spiral of thorns and stars—is often etched discreetly into trees, stones, and doorways as a sign of sanctuary. In times of unrest, it is whispered that Quillamar emerges, slowly and silently, to shield their children with a wall of living spines—and in that moment, even gods pause before proceeding.
