Notes on choosing a race

1st of Sun's Swell, AE 721
This article will be an accumulation of small, worldbuilding facts that will be specifically relevant to choosing what race you'd like to play for this campaign that didn't really have a space on any of the playable race or ethnicity and culture pages. It will be updated as needed.
  • All elf subraces are available to be played, but socially in this setting, there is less distinction between them. All varieties of high elves and wood elves (those that originated and still live on Phicen) are collectively referred to as sun elves, while drow, shadar-kai, and pallid elves (who largely live in the Dusk Region and Adis) are referred to as dark elves, and sea elves retain their name.
  • Despite elves having a higher population than any other race, half-elves of any kind are quite rare, due to a number of factors; elves tend to have very low fecundity rates, an elven couple having two children in under a century is surprising and viewed as moving quite quickly; many elven cultures value reliability and consistency, which is something shorter-lived races are viewed as not being able to provide, making them less desirable partners; finally, many areas that have large populations of elves are not especially diverse locations, leading to less encounters with other races. The most common type of half-elf are those descended from dark elves, namely drow.
  • Similarly, aarakora, kenku, and owlin are viewed as variants of the same species, and are collectively referred to as birdfolk
