Firbolg

Firbolg are one of the youngest sapient species on Aidonia, usurped only by Genasi and Selhi. Originally descended from a population of Minotaurs who settled in south-central Adis, on the dawnward side of the Siljak Mountains, they inhabited that land for countless generations, interbreeding with other nearby populations, namely Goliaths, but potentially also dark elves who were the ancestors of the present-day Hitomin people.
During the Lizdah era, a non-natural disaster cut off their usual trade routes and altered their local landscape. As a result, they were geographically isolated for some time before new, stable trade routes could be re-established. Even when the new routes were established, it would take decades for them to become as interconnected with the outside world as they once had been, leading to a bottleneck in their population to which many attribute their speciation.

Genetics and Reproduction

Generations of near total geographic and reproductive isolation led to the potential speciation of the Firbolg. The bottleneck that their population experienced after the division of the Siljak mountains led to progressively fewer and fewer individuals who were exclusively of Minotaur ancestry or of Goliath ancestry. Some still debate whether this constituted a speciation event or simply a very genetically homogenous group of hybrids.

Their skin color can span the full range human colors, but is most often olive-toned to an ochre brown. Ashy-grey colors are also common.

Facial characteristics

Firbolg tend to have soft, understated features. Their noses are often flat and wide with rounded tips, and they have similarly large, round or upturned eyes.
