Biç Berries (bɪʧ ˈbɛri)
1st of Sun's Swell, AE 721
Biç berries are a type of non-photosynthetic carnivorous plant native to the north-dawnward region of Adis, but are grown by farms all over the continent. Their name in Orcish means lure, indicating their sweet-smelling secretions which attract insects, which quickly become trapped and are consumed by the plant. In the wild, the berries they produce are often fed on by birds who will later defecate out and spread the seeds, but domesticated varieties are grown in bogs, using water to quickly and efficiently separate a large number of berries from their vines.
Basic Information
Anatomy
The biç berry plant grows long, creeping vines, often 4-6 feet in length. From the vines, it will sprout a number of fronds; initially small and coiled, the fronds will uncoil and extend out perpendicular from the main vine once the frond has grown to at least 6 inches long. Each frond will be covered small, needle-like tentacles containing two types of glands: one which secretes a sweet-smelling mucilage which attracts insects and includes enzymes to break them down, and another which will consume and process the nutrients.
Additional Information
Domestication
Biç berries have been selectively bred into a number of varieties. Most meant for consumption have been bred for larger and less bitter berries, coming in sweet and tart varieties. Other types are bred for higher levels of fiber to include in horse feed.
