Zeranzeri Deities
The Kindled of the Regime worshipped the same Gods as the other kindreds, but when they removed their entire kindred to the Underhollows, they found new gods to guide them. This flexibility, unusual among Elves, was not a one-time thing, and when Benefice Zeranzeri returned to the surface, not all of those gods stayed with them, and they found others.
Flame-in-Shadow is the one constant in the pantheons of the kindled. From the plains of their birth to the Underhollows, to the shores of the Great Delta, Flame-in-Shadow has stayed with their children, and wherever they go, the kindled stay true to their creator. They are the breath giver of the kindred, their co-creator who invested them with life and an aspect of basal flame. They are also the god of fire and darkness, of passion, illusion and truth. This dualism is a common feature of ash elf duties, never one thing, but two that lie at seeming odds to one another.
Said to be the first deity of the Underhollows to greet the Kindled on their arrival, Taker-in-Darkness is a god of the sure and the uncertain, of death, Fate and chance. They are called the implacable foe, and the unshakable friend, and like all of the traditional kindled gods, they are never depicted as a physical being, only by elaborations of an abstract design.
Strength-in-Righteousness is the moral guardian of the kindled. As god of strength and conviction, they-stand for both the strength which is born from conviction, and the ability of the strong to command morality. While overall a god of defence and defence, they are also the patron of tyrants. They uphold the principle that might should serve right, but also that might can decide what is right.
Weaver-of-Whispers is the god of the arcane; both of Magic, and of things that are hidden. They conceal and reveal secrets, and are the god of both knowledge and ignorance. Followers of the Weaver may be sages, or may be the archetypal fool, shielded by innocence.
Echoes-in-the-Tunnels is god of perception and the quest. They are patron of the seeker and the sought, guardian of the lost and of the border. Their true worshippers are typically questers, but everyone is a devotee of the Echoes when they lose their way in the Underhollows.
The last of the significant gods of the Kindled, Song-of-Steel is a god of art and Artifice, patron of poets and smiths. They prompt the kindled to pursue the perfection of form and aesthetics, but also to refine function to its highest degree.
The specifically Zeranzeri gods are different. They are still known by epithets rather than names, but they are gendered, and may be depicted in a humanoid form. They appear to be more specific than the classical kindled deities, and speak more often to their worshippers. They are less dualistic than the classical kindled gods, more focused on their patronage.
The Lady of Serpents is a goddess of snakes, but also of shadow and stone, and all places that offer shelter. Although the preeminent patroness of the Zeranzeri, she was once a humble defender of the crops and killer of vermin. She is both the protector of the Benefice and its territories and patron of those kindled who offer succour to others and shield the weak from harm. As such, she stands firm against the Ophionic Empire, although her own serpentine associations can also be advantageous in diplomacy.
In her official statuary, the Lady is depicted as a stately elven lady in long, Flowing robes. A snake coils around one arm while the other holds a rod of office. In informal depictions, she may alternatively be dressed in leathers and carrying a rat-catcher's pole in her serpentless hand.
The Dusk Dancer is the god of the night, of love and of secrets, and of motion. They are the lovers' go-between and diversion, a trickster with a heart of gold. They are also called the patron of the half World, the people and places who exist half out of sight, including artists and theatricals, and to an extent all surface ash elves, whose lives partially exist in the Underhollows still.
The Dancer is depicted as an aesuri elf, dressed in a cowled mantle over a dancer's doublet and hose. In one hand they flourish a mask, and in the other they conceal a letter. Sometimes the mask is replaced with a quill or a paintbrush.
The Silver Wanderer is the god of the moon, magic and language. He is the bridge between the Zeranzeri and the power of Doraes, the Divine Moon, and a patron of magicians and sages. He is also the patron of thieves, whom the night conceals, and watch folk, whose quarry the moon reveals. His patronage of the arcane also makes him a god of knowledge, learning and secrets.
The Wanderer is depicted as a young man dressed for the road, with a silver hood and cape. One hand holds an open book, the other an ornate key. The book's cover is blazoned with the sign of the crescent moon. A cat winds around his feet, as if steering his path true while he is lost in his reading.
The Shaded Sword is the god of open spaces; of clouds, wind and storms, and so especially beloved by sailors. They also serve as a god of battle and the hunt; of war and of survival, prayed to by soldiers and huntsmen alike. As the storm which sweeps the earth, the sword enjoins warriors to strike with great violence, but without emotion.
He is depicted as a tall, male elf in the armour of a military scout, with a bow in one hand and a sword in the other. His cloak and hair alway flow, as if in a high wind. Sometimes the weapons are changed: The sword for an axe or spear; the bow for a dart, javelin or thunderbolt.
The Lightbringer is the god of the sun and fire, of pain and of rage. She is a Relentless, resplendent deity, whose beauty burns bright and harsh. For the Zerangeri, the sun is not comfort, but nor is it a terror; she is hard, but not cruel. She guards ash elves from painful brightness.
She is depicted as a tall ash elf woman with a Crown of sun rays. She carries a lantern in which the sun blazes, and in the other hand a double-bladed sword, also in the classical shape of a solar ray.
