Nome of the Cursed Waters

The Grand Duchy of the Cursed Waters arose from communities of wreckers and pirates preying on ships mired in the currents of the Horn Perilous. Under the influence of a group of Triton-born water Genasi who defected from the Kingdom of the Jagged Teeth, these pirates turned pirate-hunter, and later honest merchants who assumed titles of nobility under the authority of a Grand Duke, the head of the largest merchant family in the duchy, the Tritecho, who claims authority over all the Horn and the turbulent waters.
Centuries after their incorporation into The Elysian Federation in CY29.3, the Tritecho still hold the ducal throne, and water genasi families still hold a substantial part of the duchy’s wealth, but there are also many powerful Human, triton, sea elf and grung trading houses. The government is the secretive Council of Twelve, consisting of a representative from each of the major merchant sectors: agricultural produce, livestock, art, gems, precious metals, stone, common metals and metalwork, cloth and clothing, lumber, spices and botanicals, arcana and lore, and manuscripts.
The hereditary Grand Duke of Tirtecho remains the Nomarch of the Cursed Waters, and the seven electors are appointed by the Council of Twelve as needed, after no less than twelve hours' deliberation.
