Imperial Organisations

The Imperial Organisations are the small number of agencies that answer directly to the Imperial Council of the Empire of the Southern Sun, rather than to the Imperial Houses or the Emperor. For members of these Organisations, the Organisation becomes like their house. All members of the Organisations are granted at least citizen status.

The Imperial Exchequer

The civil service responsible for customs, taxation and revenue is headquartered in the Donjon of Golean and has sweeping powers to assess and control trade, banking and central spending across the Empire. They are probably the most loathed body in the Empire.

The Imperial Military

While Imperial House Golean is responsible for its recruitment and promotions, the Imperial Military answers to the Council. The bulk of the commissioned and warrant officer corps are recruited from the term lists of the Academies, but the regular soldiers are volunteers, who serve a five year tour at the pleasure of the Emperor, in return for a guarantee of citizenship.   The Imperial Military is divided into the Border Garrisons, the Coastal Fleet, the Donjon Guard and the Northern Watch. The Garrisons and the Watch are responsible for supporting House Daarium in the defence of the Greenwall, the Donjon Guard protect Golean against attack, but are not permitted to enter the Inner City, and the Coastal Fleet, while notionally responsible for defending the shores of the Empire against invasion are, in practice, more often used as pirate hunters.

The Imperial Mysterium

Those who show potential for magical study are assigned to the Gold Road of the Academies. While all magic is studied there, the curriculum is set by the Mysterium, the central body responsible for maintaining orthodoxy of study and defining the proper and improper uses of magic. It is the Mysterium which decides what studies are part of the grand traditions, and which are merely curiosities.   The grand traditions are the revered Schools of Wizardry - abjuration, conjuration, divination, enchantment, evocation, necromancy and transmutation - the bardic studies of the colleges of Eloquence, Lore and Valor, and elemental and draconic sorcery. The Empire considers illusion to be a minor art, but recognises it as a respectable tradition alongside the minor schools, the common colleges and other forms of sorcery. Other forms of arcane magic are considered common arts and not suitable to Academy training.

The Imperial Church

The Church is an organisation which oversees orthodoxy in the religious houses and individual cults, rather than engaging directly in worship itself. The religion of the Empire combines the cults of the Imperial Gods, patrons of the Imperial Houses, the Gods of Foundation and the patron gods of the lesser houses.
