Harmos and the Inland

Harmos is the largest city in the Free Coast, and the only truly Freecoaster city that is not, in fact, on the coast. It is the administrative centre of the land-locked Inland district, another instance of Freecoaster nomenclative imagination. Once known as Oxyura, it retains much Ophionic architecture.   Similar to its centre, the Inland is the largest district of the Free Coast, but a sparsely populated one. Most of the population live in the north of the district. Agriculture in the Inland is poor, but the north has a strong and growing industrial base. The southern population clusters around fortified mineheads and a series of watchtowers along the edge of the Road of Shackles. After Industry and resource extraction, the Inland is mostly dedicated to military defence against the Ophionic Empire.   With its poor agricultural production, the Inland is reliant on trade to feed its population. Its exports are minerals and the products of industry, mostly weapons and armour, from the same foundries that equip the defence forces on the border. Many in the Southern Crownlands see the Inland's need for agricultural staples as a sign of dependence, but the Inlanders consider the coastal districts to be reliant on them for defence against the Virin-yal, a conflict which has led to many uncomfortable stand-offs in council, and one brief civil war.
