Industry

The past century has seen the emergence of a new force on Aiaos; the rise of industry. Industrialism first appeared as a form of Artifice focused on the bulk production of infused items. The ideas and principles of industrial artifice were then developed into a broader philosophical structure, and while there are still relatively few industrialist artificers - the work is demanding, expensive, and ties the practitioner to a forced base of operations - the concepts of mass production, standardisation and the first elements of automation have proven appealing to many.   Industry requires a certain density of population, and so is linked to an increase in urbanism, often - but not always - as a result of enclosing and other agricultural advances that require a smaller rural workforce. The increased urban population means a growth in potential workforce, a work-force that can be employed to create a production line, powered either by people and animals, or by a Mill of some kind. Once prepared, a production line is capable of creating large quantities of standardised goods, without requiring extensive education or training. It can also be retasked with relative ease.   Most of those working on such production lines are former rural peasants or serfs, many of whom are proud to be performing such skilled labour, and abuses in terms of pay and conditions are sadly neither uncommon, nor far outwith the expectations of the rural poor. Industrialism is less common in areas with a large rural population. It is also less common in areas with large numbers of slaves or thralls, where streamlining would risk creating an idle section of the underclass. It is most common in the Sacred Republic, which is also a great sponsor of industrial artifice.
