Gnomon
For all the mysteries of the Tore and its catacombs, they pale in comparison to the Gnomon, the upper part of the original spire, which now hangs in the air, four or five storeys above the ragged walls of the Tore. Far from the grasp of ordinary scavengers and plunderers, it is said to be a trove of rare treasures and home to flocks of winged draconic beasts.
The Gnomon is believed to go up as far as the catacombs go down. Legend has it that the topmost floors lie within The Firmament, but no-one has ever reached so high and returned to the surface. Many theologians argue that a direct stair to the Firmament would violate the integrity of the Web of Fate, and that if it once provided such a passage, the Gnomon does so no longer. What is certain is that it rises higher than any skyship or animal can fly, save perhaps a dragon.
The Gnomon takes its name from the shadow it casts as Soraes circles the sky; long, thin, and reaching out towards the edges of the dome like a vast sundial. The progression of the shadow is used as a mark of time around the Crown, although further out it is just a passing phenomenon, appearing briefly in every twelve hour day in all but the most rimward of locations.
Doraes also casts a shadow from the Gnomon, as the moon of Aiaos passes directly overhead each midnight.
