Homeland: Emeraldhaven, Thalaria
Overview
Zorblild Marblecheeks, affectionately called “Zorb” by friends, is a charming rogue who operates in the grey areas of morality. With a mixed heritage from a Svirfneblin father and Forest Gnome mother, Zorb is a thief with quick wit, unparalleled dexterity, and a penchant for shiny treasures. His antics and exploits have made him a well-known figure in both Thalaria’s underworld and the bustling markets of Kemet, where he is currently caught up in the intrigue of the Festival of the Passing Shadow.
Appearance
Zorblild is a wiry and agile gnome who stands slightly taller than most of his kin at 3'7". His copper-hued hair, usually tied back in a loose ponytail, frames his sharp green eyes, which constantly glint with mischief. His patchwork leather armour and assortment of tools suggest a life of risk and adventure, while his confident grin hints at a rogue’s unshakable swagger.
Early Life
Zorb was born in the trade city of Emeraldhaven, Thalaria, a bustling hub where cultures and goods collide. His father, Orren Marblecheeks, was a jeweller whose meticulous craftsmanship taught Zorb the importance of patience and precision. His mother, Laryssa Forestgleam, was a bard who filled his early years with stories, music, and mischief. These influences created a blend of cunning and charisma that Zorb honed into a talent for subterfuge.
From a young age, Zorb found joy in outsmarting others. He turned simple childhood pranks into elaborate schemes, such as rigging dice games or orchestrating minor heists. His antics sometimes got him into trouble, but his charm often bailed him out. His parents, torn between pride and frustration, could only watch as their son’s love of adventure grew beyond their control.
The Thieves' Guild
As a teenager, Zorb was recruited into the Thieves’ Guild of Thalaria. The guild saw his potential and put him to work as a runner, but Zorb quickly proved himself capable of much more. His sharp mind, nimble hands, and natural charm earned him a reputation as one of the guild’s rising stars. Over the years, he took on increasingly daring jobs, from infiltrating noble estates to smuggling goods through heavily guarded checkpoints.
Despite his success, Zorb’s relationship with the guild was not without complications. His tendency to take risks and his occasional “heart of gold” moments made him unpredictable. This unpredictability earned him both admirers and rivals, chief among them Asharra Whisperblade (a half-elf), a fellow rogue whose cunning and skills rival Zorb’s own.
Motivations and Personality
Zorb is driven by a love of adventure and the thrill of the heist. While he craves wealth and shiny treasures, his actions are often motivated by the excitement of outwitting others rather than the actual reward. Despite his greed, Zorb has a surprising moral streak. He’s been known to help those in desperate need, though he’d never admit it was out of kindness.
His personality is a blend of charm and mischief. Zorb loves to play the role of the charming scoundrel, using his wit and charisma to navigate dangerous situations. However, beneath the surface, he wrestles with questions of identity and purpose. Is he merely a thief, or could he be something more?
The Festival of the Passing Shadow
Zorblild’s latest escapade has brought him to Kemet, where the grand Festival of the Passing Shadow is in full swing. Disguised as a travelling merchant selling counterfeit jewellery and enchanted trinkets, Zorb has set his sights on a legendary relic: the Eye of Anubset, said to be hidden within a sacred temple.
Ever the opportunist, Zorb has begun gathering information, making connections with festival-goers and traders. He hopes to turn the chaos of the festival to his advantage, though he knows full well that danger lurks around every corner.
Allies and Rivals
- Nefir-Amun: A black-market merchant in Kemet who serves as Zorb’s contact. Their relationship is strained, with Nefir-Amun often complaining about Zorb’s audacity.
- Khufu: A street urchin who tried to pick Zorb’s pocket but was instead taken under his wing. Khufu now acts as Zorb’s lookout and informant during the festival.
- Asharra Whisperblade: A fellow rogue from the Thieves’ Guild who has also arrived in Kemet for the festival. Asharra and Zorb have a long-standing rivalry marked by playful competition and mutual distrust.
Zorblild Marblecheeks is a character of contradictions: a greedy libertine with a surprising moral streak, a thief with the potential to be a hero. Whether he becomes a legend or fades into obscurity depends on the choices he makes in the heat of the moment and the stories those choices inspire in others.
